After re-boot and after logging on, a dialogue box appears from Internet Explorer stating: Can not find file:/// Make sure your path or Internet address is correct.

This happened with IE7, and it happens when I upgraded to IE8. Looked in msconfig, registry, startup etc. The system was recently cleaned of many trojans and spyware, what could I do next, it is just annoying, thanks.

If you cleaned malware off, it's possible one of them was hijacking your home page. When you removed the malware, you removed the offending page hijack. Have you changed your homepage back to something?

Just a guess based on what you said. I got a similar error this morning, after my computer lost its network connection. Since you're posting, I'm gussing "lack of connectivity" isn't your problem?

Does this do this after it boots automatically, or when you try to open IE? If when you try to open IE, are you using a shortcut on your desktop? If yes, try going to Start/All Programs and fine IE and see if it opens from there. Could be a bad shortcut on your desktop.
Also, something could have been removed when cleaning up your PC.

A few other members have had the same problem recently. Try using the Search function and see what solutions are in those threads.

LATER: I just tried doing a Search and for some reason it came up empty. No idea why -- I know darn well there has been at least one thread here on that error message, maybe more.

This happens when I boot the system, acknowledge the dialog box and everything is good. This does not happen when I use IE8 or when I used IE7, only on the boot up. Malware had issues and all is removed except for this and the restore service does not work, can not find file and service does not load. Deleted system volume information, no help. Thanks for any suggestions, I will be running scandisk tomorrow.

Ran Trojan Remover and Spybot, all malware removed but for a price.
