When I connect the above data card/modem to my computer, it installs as a cd-rom together with the existing dvd writer(in Device Manager)

I have to unplug the E220 vs 3.2.1(latest) each time I wish to use the dvd writer, if I don't the dvd writer doesn't work

I have tried uninstalling the software completely(several times) & re-installing, but the installation always installs directly as a cd-rom drive(in Device Manager) each time & not as a normal mass storage drive in C-drive as I would expect.

I would be grateful for any help to solve this problem

    Many thanks

considering this is (according to Huawei's website) an HSDPA USB Modem it really shouldn't be showing up as an CDROM nor should it show up as removable storage device under my computer either maybe instaed of doing an automatic install try doing it manually ie: when prompted to install drivers click the let me find/install the driver then brows the driver cd for the correct diver

This 'thing' installs itself the moment its plugged in, there's no cd & the whole install operation is done by itself & ALWAYS into the dvd/cd drive location - why there & not elswhere, search me, but thanks for your interest!

    Hi Zulubase,

Please take the time to enter your system specifications, this may help answering your query.

    A strange situation :)

As a workaround try changing the drive letter of your DVD-RW to say X in Disk Management.

Stange indeed however, I have personally experienced a pen drive (memory stick) being identified as a USB modem due to my brothers botched attempts at installing drivers. The solution was to remove all USB device drivers in safe mode (Win 98 SE) and start from scratch. Hence my request for system specs.

Have updated pc specs as best I can, Sony dvd writer to be replaced as same was stuffed up by this Huawei modem, which is interestingly & perhaps correctly in the 'modem' slot in Device Manager, becomes even stranger that it should install, seemingly correctly there & also as a rom drive!
Regarding the removal of the device drivers in safe mode, don't know how that will work in XPhome.
Will perhaps change the drive letter when I've installed the new writer
Yes I have emailed Huawei, few days ago, no response as yet

Many thanks to all, will post results asap

PS: both the rom drive & modem installations(in device manager) disappear when Huawei is unplugged, so hopefully will therefore not damage the new writer?
