Where do I find the timing adjustment to allow my PC extra time to download emails with large attachments.

    Thanks anojetak

The question is for my cousin who lives in Czech Republic -although he is learning does not speak English. My Czech is also poorly, especially in the technical department.

When I send him emails over 5MB - the attachments get lost. His post box is 10 MB.

I will try to get the detail of his OP and EC

    Thanks again

With a mailbox that small I wouldn't be suprised if his internet service provider is also limiting the size of individual emails. It may not be possible to send your cousin 5Mb+ emails but have you considered FTP or some other form of file transfer?

    EDIT:

Another thought that I should have considered earlier...

SMTP adds overhead to your emails (sometimes quite a lot) that 5MB email could easily be over 8MB of data flying over the internet and stored in your cousins mailbox. Something else to consider anyway.

My cousin Joe's computer is a couple of years old and has been receiving large emails until the last couple of months. Otherwise the PC functions OK.

Now if the emails exceed 5MB the email arrives stripped of its attachments
The attachments are usually short movies.

His operating system is XP and email client is IE7

    Thanks for your advice Wilfire

However in view of the fact that this is only a recent development I thought somehow maybe the timing on the email client went adrift ?

Of course that the internet provider could be limiting the size of his individual emails is a possibility.

    Thanks for the thought Matt
But I feel reluctant posting my movies on a website.
Something has happened in the last couple of months which needs identifying and possibly fixing.

More likely the ISP was enforcing it's rules more strickly. For what it's worth I have 5 x 50Mb mailboxes from my ISP and I still wouldn't be comfortable receiving 5Mb+ emails. The POP3/SMTP protocols were originally designed for text transfer with the odd graphic/photo/data document. In my opinion it's far from ideal when transfering large data files of any form.

How about getting a G-mail account? You send them to there and give him the password so that he can get into it and watch them. That way only you and him would have access to it.

I will definitely pass this onto my cousin as being one of the propositions and he can contact his ISP and enquire into the situation

    Yes a good thought MrBill
But he wants to download the attachments onto his computer and there should be a way of fixing the error without having to sideskirt the issue.

Wasn't trying to sideskirt the issue. If his ISP (and it sounds like it is) is limiting the size of downloads, I would see no choice unless you broke the message up into pieces and then put it back together with one of those programs designed to do that.

My guess is one of two:

    1. The ISP size limit as mentioned before
    2. Check the AV software on the PC, it could have a setting that does this

Agreed, I should have thought if that too but my AV is set to adjust the subject to let me know attachments have been stripped, that and the fact that anojetak later mentioned movie files threw me of though.

    Well worth a look at.
