I read through previous posts to try and get an answer to my question concerning I have a new microphone headset but i cant get the microphone to work. This was a result answer:

Start > Control Panel (In classic view) > Speech.
    Select the Speech Recognition tab.
Choose one of the "Recognition Profiles ". If none are listed, create one.
In the "Microphone" section, click on button "Audio Input ".
In Audio Input Settings window, click on radio button "Use this audio input device ".
Review the list of devices in the drop-down list and select the correct device. Depending on the specific device and system configuration, only generic devices may be listed here.
    Click on button "Properties ".
In the Advanced Audio Properties window click on radio button "Use this audio input device ".
    Select "Microphone" from drop-down list.
Click OK > OK > Apply.
Tap or speak into the mike and check the horizontal "Level" flag in the Microphone section for activity.
Assuming there is activity, click on "Configure Microphone" to set the volume level.

Sadly, I can get this far "Start > Control Panel (In classic view) > Speech." But there is no option for the rest.
Not there Select the Speech Recognition tab.
Not there Choose one of the "Recognition Profiles ".
Not there In the "Microphone" section, click on button "Audio Input ".

This is what i see when I go into the speech folder.

And if I choose the sounds and audio devices, this is what I see.

Im totally lost! I thought I would just plug it in and away we go.

I think this may explain why. Read "Hooking into Windows XP Speech "

Hi ohcheap1, What are you trying to do with the microphone? Is it for use with Skype or the likes? Neil.

Yep. And sadly I dont think the above advice is going to work because that speech engine is for XP.

If you are only trying to connect for Skype there is a protocol to follow and as I had a disaster on my comp and haven't reloaded Skype, give me some time and I will hopefully get the info you need. Neil.;)

    Try this:
    Go to:
    Start
    Programs
    Accessories
    Entertainment
    Volume Control
    Options
    Properties
    Microphone (ensure Ticked)
    Back to Options
    Advanced Controls (tick)à/open
    Microphone
    Scroll down
    Check "Microphone"
If the bar "Microphone" is available, the microphone is detected by Windows now go on
(If not, Windows has a problem with your microphone)
Just to check if your microphone is broken, you can use your headphones instead. They really work!
    Check "Advanced properties"
    Check Micro "Advanced"
    Open
    Check "20db boost" if possible
Set micro volume manually to app 50%
Ignore if the microphone is muted. This is controlled by Skype

    Now go back to
    Entertainment
    Sound recorder
Run audio recorder and check for quality and volume. If necessary, adjust.

Now you shall check your voice by using a Skype call <<echo123>>
Here you can monitor (mirror) your own voice via VOI.

Check also device manager for problems (yellow signs)

Let's know if this is the correct procedure. Neil.

Sorry, I assumed that you had plugged in your microphone to your soundcard. My unit is Headphone with mic attached and twin lead with a PINK connector and a GREEN connector. Make sure that you plug the PINK (Mic) plug into the Mic (PINK) female on your soundcard first - then try the procedure again. It will prove that the Mic is recognized by the comp and the GREYED out sections should then be usable. The GREEN connector on mine does not have to be plugged in.Cheers Neil.
