How many of you think that this is the real scammer in the photo? Or did she just choose a photo off the internet? What are your opinions?

Most likely and for others reading...

It is never a good Idea to open attachments from scammers/spammers/unknown sources and quite often even from people you know.

I don't use TB also BUT you can turn it off by turning off the pane view. With that turned off, you don't automatically open your e-mail but can look at the sender and subject and simply delete it without opening it at all.

    I replied and she wrote:

    hello dear

I am sorry for my late reply which is due to the condition here in the refugee camp. Since two days now there is no elctricity and water and the internet is not working. Please you can call me on this number 00221764851226 and when you call just tell the receiver your name and where you are calling from and that you want to talk with me. The phone belongs to the receiption office of the camp master who is a christian Reverend and i have registered your name to receive calls from you anytime, so feel free to call me please and include your own telephone number so that i can call you briefly and tell you to call me back when i am in Reverend's office.

I have attached my picture for you in this mail and i hope you will like it. i will give you my identification and other important documents about the money and the gold later when we are sure of each other. I am 24yrs and never married and i will also give you picture of my family when we were all together in my country. I finished higher school and was entering the university before the tragedy that came to my family. you will receive my school testimonial .

i want a man i can trust with my future and who will be faithful and honest with me and not disapoint me when the money is released, that is why i will like to meet you face to face when the time comes and we will visit the bank and do everything together.

have a nice day and thanks for your concern.

    Victoria

It's all a rather sad and pathetic scam demonstrating the depth of corruption in some human beings. I NEVER open e-mails from persons I do not recognize, particularly if there is an attachment. While I don't use Thunderbird, I would strongly advise you to turn OFF the panes. That way you can simply delete messages without having to open them. In fact, first move them into your SPAM box so that this particular jerk will not get into your Inbox again and then delete it from your SPAM folder. If you spend time training your SPAM filters you should not be bothered by these sorts of scams in the future.

Sniper - I received a PM from you that was a link titled hmm and nothing else.

Needless to say, it was immediately deep sixed as I too, subscibe to the philosophy Wildfire outlined above. Although no offense is meant, you have previously posted links in other forums on the BBS that included a malware payload. (of which you were unaware) Should we assume that you are also unaware of what kinds of payloads can be embedded in seemingly harmless jpgs or other photo formats.

If you find correspondence like this young lady's interesting and want to pursue it, I would suggest you investigate using a virtual machine environment at the very least. Good Luck.

    ;)
