    ok, done.

While I was at it I decided to do some testing.

In safe mode with no NIC

Spybot open and close first time OK
open second time OK, close - crash

In normal mode with no NIC

Open and close two times OK
    Third time crash on open

In normal mode with new NIC driver installed

    Open and close twice OK
    Third time crash on open

As a side note, i still get the delayed "no firewall turned on" bubble.

Maybe I should just get rid of Spybot and work without it for a few days and see what happens???????

    Well that is a Crock!

That is first time it did it in safe mode non network.

Yes I suppose uninstall it reboot run ccleaner. Then try monopoly and if no issues leave on overnight retest tomorrow without reboot!

Give us both time to clear our minds. I need to go over all we have done again.

Ok, will do. I have to get ready for work anyway.

By the way, while I was waiting I decided to run Spybot. It is running now; however, remember when we started this thing I got an "error during check" in Spybot? it was

    coolwwwsearch[144] blah blah blah

well, its back. Thought we got rid of it???

I suspect Avast is the culprit.

Thanks Dave I do need a little help here!

I thought about it but ruled it out as the issue still exists in Safe mode. But it is still possible as I have seen some Virus scanners load a module in services even tho the resident part is not there.

Lets leave Avast for now until the Prevx and Kaspersky online is complete.

We still have the issue then, we will uninsatall.

Which (thanks Dave) makes me want to know if this PC has ever had Norton or McAfee in the past?

I think this might be the same machine Mitchell and I just cleaned up a week or so ago, as he mentioned another issue he would take up elsewhere. Personally, I'd skip straight to uninstalling Avast.

I think it may have. It used to be a DELL. The only things changed in the box were the mobo and RAM after it got fried. But thats been about three years ago or so..

Ok when that is finished lets take Dave's suggestion and in Add/Remove un-install Avast.

Reboot do CCleaner reg clean to finish clearing it.

    Then run Spybot test!

Dave, its the same machine. Things were much worse before we cleaned it up. Now it's only crashing on spybot. Sometimes it will open and even run for a while other times it just crashes as it starts.

many "error during check "s in Spybot

Got home from work and decided to give Spybot a try while I watched the French Open.

It was running fine. Then started showing "Error During Check" on several files. Examples are as follows:

SmithfraudC.Koowo[13] access violation error at 004031AF in Spybot at address 0837a658

Showed the same for Stration.warezov, virtumonde, Zlob, etc

It was running fine until it hit around 126000 of 158000 or so then it crashed.

There must have been hundreds of these as the scroll marker in the scroll bar was only about 1/8" in size.

I don't know what to do. I wish I could get it to finish so I could provide a report.

Going to go to bed shortly and get some rest. Be back on the BBS around 10:00 CST

    Hi Mitch

I was pretty busy yesterday! Your last post said you were headed to bed. Hope you got some rest.

I was so hoping it was the Avast.

I think it may be time to do an SP3 slipstream and try a full overlay/repair install with that.

    Do a full Regseeker cleanup.

Seems to be a number of folks having the access violation issue with Spybot. I know you already re-installed, but would you please do it again, this time making sure all Spybot related files/folders have been removed prior to re-installing, particularly this one.

Sorry I haven't been on to post replies. Been getting things ready for tomorrow's family festivities.

I wish I had more time with this computer because I am positive someone on here is on the verge of cracking this case. But, Jim wants to pick up the computer tomorrow afternoon (fixed or not) so he can take it to his neice on his day off (tuesday).

    Dave,

I removed spybot, cleaned everything up, rebooted, cleaned everything up again, reinstalled spybot, started fine once but crashed the second time.

    Mike,

Downloaded those two programs. Nothing untoward found.

So, here is my plan. I will just uninstall Spybot - that's just a bandaide and I hate leaving things unsolved - and clean the system up again. If there is/are any other comparable program anyone can suggest, I'll get that on here.

If anybody has any other suggestions, I'm open. I will be back from work at around 5:00 a.m. CST and will work on this thing until Jim comes for it.

I still need to download SP3 to make a slipstream CD for him - that can download while I am at work - I have a slow connection:(

I want to thank you all for your help on this; you have put a lot of time and thought into it and it will unfortunately go unresolved - as far as finding the problem is concerned. But is was NOT a waste of time. The computer is "clean" and running like almost new.

    Thanks

    Mitch
