Back in January 2010 I decided to purchase some Video on Demand movies from Amazon. To do this I had to install the Amazon Unbox Video Player and I did without any problems. Several weeks ago I wanted to purchase some more and when I went to download it told me that the Unbox was corrupted and I had to remove it and install it again. I removed it, cleaned it out of my registry, rebooted and went to download and install it again. During the installation I received the error "Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation. Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information.

I went to all the Microsoft issues concerning this error and went thru and checked all of the possible solutions and found nothing that could solve the problem.

I did a System File Checker (SFC) scan to make sure all the system files were not corrupted. I tried to install it again earlier today and the problem still exists. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also where would I find the "Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) "? I did a search on my computer for "Msi.chm" and there wasn't one.

    Thanks

First off I am the only one who uses this computer so I have to assume that I do have Administrator privileges.

Now I ran the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and I didn't find anything that had the Amazon name to it, however there were several items that didn't have names and I would appreciate and help in identifying them.

    (All Users) [13.0.0.0]
    (All Users) [2.1.0.110]
    (All Users) [9.1.0.22]
    (All Users) [9.3.2]
    (All Users) 6000E609_eDocs [1.00.0000]
    (All Users) 6000E609_Help [1.00.0000]

Now I also have a program called Advanced Installer which I occasionally use to write installer programs to install some programs that I create and I was wondering could this also cause problems to the Windows Installer.

Another note: Over the weekend I installed several programs and updates which used the Windows Installer and I didn't experience any problems so I have to assume that my problems are specifically to the Unbox Video Player Player. Am I correct to assume this?

Sorry, I can't help you identify these... nor the name of the Amazon program. Maybe someone else has that program & can let you know.

Probably. That was my assumption too.

Did you uninstall it or delete it's folder? I don't know what you mean by "removed ".

I haven't resorted to registry cleaners for uninstalling and reinstalling a program. The registry entries should be (very) similar. Did you try installing the new version before you "cleaned it out of my registry ". Sorry, but I avoid editing the registry. If the system doesn't work correctly afterwards, who are you going to blame?

If Windows installer seems to work correctly, I would ask Amazon what the problem might be. You can look on their website for troubleshooting suggestions or send them a "contact us" question.

Mmmm...yes, you have identified it, try uninstalling (note: uninstalling) Advanced Installer and reinstalling it. Look for for an updated version to reinstall (or updates for a reinstall of the original version).

Don't expect that programs you install will work perfectly, many can be flawed. Their uninstallers can be flawed. I avoid installing programs in the first place, unless I can confirm they will work or uninstall correctly.

I'm sorry it took so long to reply. After a little research I determined that the entry "(All Users) [2.1.0.110]" was referring to the version of the application that was on the computer before I removed it. After deleting the entry I went to install the application again and was successful. Sorry I didn't get back sooner to report.
    Thanks for all the help.

Sorry but I have to reopen this thread because I discovered another problem specific to the Amazon Unbox Video player installation.

After I corrected the problem I noted above, I installed the Unbox Player and it installed and configured correctly but didn't work so I contacted the Amazon Support and he sent me the following instructions:

    1. Make sure Amazon service is not running
    2. delete this folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Amazon\Amazon Digital Video "
    3. go to control panel and remove "Amazon Unbox Video" using Add Remove Program
    4. Install Amazon Unbox Video again

Now when I went to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ folder the Amazon folder wasn't there and when I checked the C:\Documents and Settings\Sal Fantasia\Application Data\ folder it wasn't there either.

I ran the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility and I saw this line: (All Users) Amazon Unbox Video (2.1.0.124).

Well I'm assuming the line above tells me that Windows Installer service installed the Unbox Video player in the (All Users) Application Data folder but since it wasn't there I did a search and I found a folder named "Amazon Digital Video" located in the C:\Windows\Temp folder which was created on 1/31/2010 which was the first time I installed the program and all in contained was an empty folder named "upgrade ".

I have to assume that the Windows Installer program doesn't seem to be working correctly and I was wondering if the Installer could be corrupted or could the Unbox application be causing the problem. If it's the former is there any way the Installer can be repaired and if it's the latter could someone suggest what it could be so I can pass the information on to the Amazon Support?

The main installation should be in C:\Program Files. If ...\All Users\Application Data\... is a major part of the program, frankly, I wouldn't trust it (it would go into my list of programs I "love to hate ", some camera programs do the same thing).

The program (Amazon) seems to be the source (you say other programs will install and they don't have any trouble).

If you have installed a updated version of Windows Installer, it will appear the list in Add or Remove Programs. You can uninstall that version and reinstall a newer version if it is available.

I still don't know what you mean by "removed "! I don't know of any instructions to remove a program, only to uninstall it.

If you are deleting program files without instruction, good luck.

I apologize for the confusion. When I say remove I am referring to uninstall. I always remove programs thru the Add/Remove programs, or in the case of some programs, thru their "uninstall program" link. I do not have Windows Installer listed in the Add/Remove Programs so I have to assume that I do not have an updated version. The funny thing is on my other XP, that I keep on just for my server, I downloaded and installed the Unbox Video Player without any problems. I have another thread running that concerned something I didn't recognize in my HijackThis log and it's possible that there might be something strange roaming in my computer. I just got an answer to it with a lot of instructions so maybe solving that problem might solve this also. BTW how do I update my Windows Installer?
    Thanks

OK I'm a bit confused now. I received a private message from an Admin
and after looking at the thread all is see is that I was thanked for explaining a confusing post and wishing me luck on my other problem.

The only other thing I see that hasn't been addressed was my question "BTW how do I update my Windows Installer? ".

As far as the other problem that I thought might be causing some problems I am still waiting on the Malware person to tell me that my system is clean. I've already installed the Amazon Unbox Player successfully on my other computer so as far as the problem with my main computer I am not considering it anymore.

As far as removing (uninstall) programs, the only way I do this is either by a link "Uninstall this program" which was added to the start menu at the time of the program's installation or through the Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs section.

I don't know what else I can say about this specific problem.

    Thank you

Mattman gave you the link to the latest version of Windows installer in post #10. Did you go there, download to your hard drive and install it? (it installs over the top of your existing version, just double click on the downloaded installation file).
