I didn't use my desktop computer for about 2 months. When I started to use it, it works fine for about half an hour then it starts to slow down and eventually freezes on a website and I can't access any websites unless I restart the computer or keep hitting the website over and over. I have defragged, ran disk clean, ran anti spyware, ran anti virus, turned off add-ons in IE, removed extra toolbars and removed any programs that I haven't used for a while. I'm using IE 8, with 12 gb free out of 40 gb, with 1.5 mb of RAM... I'm writing this thread on a laptop. Is time for major surgery or a new compter? Any suggestions please. Thanks.

Could be a variety of things from a leaky program, what does task manager(Ctrl Alt Delete) show in the applications tab when your computer is slow. Check the processes tab too for anything using a large amount of memory or CPU usage, ignore system idle process but post the figure there too (in this case the higher the better).

In Applications, only MSN (IE ?) is the only thing running.
In the Processes tab, the only large number is the SYSTEM....93 K...IE...49K....svhost.....23K...system idle process is 16K
I could only open my homepage this time and access my emails easily, but when I click on the website to go to this thread, the computer freezes, consequently, I'm replying on my laptop now.
    PS
When I check the task manager on the laptop, I have about 6 applications running now...but only one application at a time on the desktop....

Ok that's memory usage, do any of the processes use more memory over time? eg svhost using 23k then maybe 25k then 27k etc (That would indicate a memory leak).

What's the processor usage (described as a percentage, under the CPU column)... do any processes use consistently more than 50% of your processor? (This would indicate your system is not powerful enough).

We can't rule out malware yet here but I'd rather get a better picture of your problem before refering you to the malware specialists who are always busy.

Sorry..the only number under the CPU column right now is 99, pretty constantly and that's for System Idle Process, all the others have 0...at times it changes to 77 or 85 and AVG goes to 20 and back to 0.
So far svchost is about the same and I haven't noticed any major changes.

Was it acting strange before you stored it for few months?

Ok, let's rule out malware first... Even if malware isn't involved the tests these guys do could show up other problems...

Please read this and post requested logs in the Malware and virus removal board.

    NOTES:
When posting the logs ensure word wrap is switched off (in notepad Uncheck Format->Word Wrap) as this makes them difficult to read.

Be aware that only Malware analysts will advise and they are often busy. Your post will be taken on a first come first served basis but it may take a while before you receive a reply.

Include a link to this thread if you can.

Just some questions before I get started...how would I disable any script blocking and how would I include a link of this thread? Should I start a separate thread at the Malware and virus removal board, giving all of the info over again as I did before, along with the logs? I hope that I can follow their procedures without messing up.

Start a new thread in the malware board, I'll keep my eyes open and post a link to this thread. Don't worry too much about script blocking at the moment.

OK will do. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you... we have a big time difference, plus the computer isn't cooperating.
PS I've opened a new thread at the Malware Board and attached the logs...I could only find one long one and not two as it is suggested. I hope I didn't do anything wrong.
PPS. I notice that my post in Malware appears twice...I don't know why that happened but I would like to keep the latest one...how can I delete the first one? Maybe this happened because of my messed up computer???
