I really don't know if this is the right place to post this question, but I am wondering if anyone know what tty1.exe is. The computer in question all of a sudden is agonizingly slow. When I pull up the task manager, there must be 50 instances of this process running. I have run all virus and spyware scans and don't come up with anything but some tracking cookies. The system is xp service pack 3 and runs 2 gigs of memory. A google search doesn't come up with anything that I understand. Any help is appreciated.

Go to Start > Run > type MSCONFIG > OK > click the Startup tab > click the Disable All button. Close out and reboot. See if the problem has gone away. If so, you can go back to msconfig and start up some things incrementally until the culprit is defined.

If however it didn't make any difference when you disabled all of those items, it might indicate that you have some malware that your prevention programs aren't detecting.

If that is the case, you will need to go to the Malware-Virus removal forum here and follow the directions for posting a log there for review by the resident experts.

edit: It might also be helpful to press Ctrl+Alt+delete to invoke the Task Manager. Then check the Processes running to see what is using the most CPU time. Do so by clicking on the Processes tab and then on the CPU column header twice. See what the name of the process is that is most busy.

Thanks for the response. I will take a look at the startups, however, the only ones allowed to run are ones that I know and know that are needed on startup. It may be a badie, but you would think that in addition to the antimalware programs running on this computer and 2 different online scans, something would have been found. Do you have any idea what tty1.exe is? It s located in C:\windows\system\tty1exe. Thanks.

From the name it would seem to be related to some Telephony program but that's just a stab in the dark.

How about renaming it for a test (tty1.old) and see if things settle down. Even if it creates an error, it might help isolate what is depending on it. You may have to do that in Safe Mode if it refuses because it's in use.

It's not a standard Windows XP file.

Since a Google search doesn't show any hit's for the file, there's a great chance this is Malware (a randomly named file), so please:

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

I am starting to believe that it is a malware problem. Found something in startups that looks questionable. Thank you for the help. I will move over to the virus removal section and bug them for a while - in the morrow.
