In Windows Explorer, when I left-click on a directory in the right panel, instead of opening the directory, a command prompt window appears. The title of this black window is c:\\windows\system32\cmd.exe. The only manner I can open a directory is to open it from the left panel, or right click and choose open. What happened? And, how can I fix it? Thank you.

Go to Start >Run and type:

    regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
ps. Be sure to include the space before and after the /i

Press enter or click OK. The effect is immediate with no reboot required.

    Wow

    Hey Surfer Dude,
You are awesome! I only wish I could do half as much as you and computers. Thank you for your extremely prompt answer.
    Sincerely,
    Gary, who is never boring.

:D Once in a while I get lucky. Actually the malady you posted is pretty common although it doesn't usually manifest itself as in your situation. Generally it will cause the Search window to open rather than the Command box.

    All the best.
