Have 84 critical updates pending. Windows Update gets them, shows a list but file size is 0 kb and download time shows 0 minutes.

When I download, I get "Intitializing Installation," then a message that all have failed! I have tried deselecting all and choosing just one download with the same result. No error code, only the following message:

Problem: Problem with your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded and installed.

Running a home LAN (Linksys). Downloads to other machines work OK, so it does not appear to be router firewall related.

Could not find anything describing this on Microsoft technical site!

    Thanks for the help!
    Rich

Hi, Rich. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

    1. Please click Start > Run...
    2. Type (or paste) %windir%\windowsupdate.log into the Open: field.
    3. Click the OK button.
This should open windowsupdate.log in Notepad.
    4. Scroll down to near the end of the log and look for
      or similar.
    5. Drag your mouse from the beginning of that section to the end of the log so it is highlighted.
    6. Right-click on the highlighted text and select Copy.
    7. Open a reply window in this thread, right-click in the message editing area, and select Paste.

I expect that will contain error code information that may be helpful.

    PeteC Referred Posting from Paulo22

Thanks for the assist from all! The Posting PeteC passed along from July 2007solved my update problem!

I had problems with XP Home, so I tried the recovery disk for a repair. Since then, Windows Update would find cirtical updates, but not allow them to be downloaded and installed.

The solution was Suggestion 2 in Paulo22's posting that orginally came from Stretch952.

Needed to download this link: http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe
Save it to the C: drive
    Click Start->Run, type C:WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

Downloads from Windows Update now working properly!

Hmmmm, I expected to see error codes in the log.

How about pasting the section of the log for the date/time you encountered the problems? Perhaps that will be helpful.

    Have you tried PeteC's suggestion?

EDIT: Just got a PM from Rich notifying me that he solved his problem. I would have sworn Rich didn't mention he tried PeteC's suggestion above when I typed my follow-up here. The 3-hour time stamp difference certainly has me confused. Maybe I had this thread open for a few hours while I was doing other things and didn't notice Rich's most recent post when I submitted this post.

Anyway, I'm glad you solved your issue, Rich. Thanks for your follow-up!

If you're interested in why this happens, you can read about it here. According to the article, all that's necessary is to register the dll's that are used by Windows Update. I haven't had the opportunity to try it myself however. I posted this fix in another thread about this but unfortunately never got an answer back as to whether it fixed the problem or not.

Stealth Windows update prevents XP repair - Repaired installations of XP can't be updated
