When I go to the search function, the only thing that appears on the left of the window is the little dog at the bottom. Also when I try to open WMP, it says an internal aplication error has occured. If I try to play a video it says "Can not create DirectShow Player.

    Thanks

I would not be able to connect those errors, but at least download and install a recent version of WMP or if it is current, reinstall it.

Directshow is a DirectX program. DirectX runs with your multimedia hardware drivers (like graphics drivers). Graphics, audio, etc, drivers run through the chipset/motherboard drivers.

If you may think the problem relates back to drivers, I would look for and install the latest drivers in the reverse order to the above. Chipset/motherboard, then graphics (audio if you think it may help), then update or reinstall DirectX. Since you are a beginner, this should be valuable experience.

If the problems are related, it may be a low-level Windows problem. See if anyone can offer some suggestions. If you cannot find a solution, try booting to the Windows CD and running a repair.

does this system pass normal maintenance/checks? i'd start there.

    chkdsk via disktools

    disk cleanup next

run normal viri/trojan/spy scans w/ current .dats

check u'r updates and maybe sfc /scannow

No go. I get an error message that reads:

"The disk check could not be performed because the disk ckeck utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed only by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule this disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer? "

I have re-started my computer 3 times and still get the same error message.

it's supposed to do that ;) ... then ... on reboot, it should do a 'chkdsk' blue screen where it goes thru 3 stages ... watch the screen. does this happen? if not, u've got problems w/ the disk which explains the problems i'd think

u should answer 'yes' to the 'do this at reboot?' prompt of course

Thanks to everyone for your help. I figured it out though. First I uninstalled WMP 10. Even with WMP 9, I was getting the same error message. Then I followed these instructions:
They fixed my WMP problem. Then I re-installed WMP 10 and as it was installing, it asked me for the Windows XP CD because some things were eplaced by others or somethin like that. Anyway, I put in the CD and all is well now. My search even works after all this:)
