I think my children have finally destroyed the laptop. On start up it goes to the black window with the option to "start windows normally ". when I click it goes through the motions then right back to the same window.

I have tried the other options on the window such as "safe mode" and it goes right back to the window.

Is there a fix? or is it trashed.

laptop is 8 years old. HP

    That may be a $64,000 question :)

Does the laptop have a recovery partition - on boot at or just after the splash/POST screen is there a message, probably at the bottom of the screen, Press Fx for Recovery, where x is between 1 & 12.

Recovery, if it works will restore the computer to the factory state - all data & programs will be lost.

It's rather rare for a laptop hard drive to last 8 years. The first thing I'd do is check it with the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostics to see if it is failing.

I'm sorry I don't understand. I cannot get out of the window that asks if I want to start in "normal" mode. when pressing F8 during start up I was able to do a diagnostic on the hard drive and it failed during the comprehensive check.

    still confused

The test or the actual check? - it is pointing to a hard drive failure I suspect.

To expand on Doc's post extract the hard drive and identify make & model no., then replace the drive. Go to the manufacturer's web site (on another computer) and download the disk diagnostic software (DOS version) which will run from a bootable CD on boot up. I suspect that exercise may only serve to confirm the findings of the test you ran.

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

I have not been able to find a source of recovery disks - these would/should have been made when the laptop was first purchased.

Possibly there is a recovery partition - try pressing F10 repeatedly as soon as the splash screen appears.

If the drive has failed no form of recovery is possible.

Do you have the serial number and product number of the laptop. Should be located on the bottom of the laptop.

are there any letters after the HP Pavillion dv5000. Like dv5000ea dv5000t CTO. When i run dv5000 it show as the OS's as Vista 32Bit and Vista 64bit. If you live in the US HP Support's phone # is 800-474-6836. They can search faster then I can just to see if they're still offering Recovery Discs. with tax and shipping I paid around $16 and change for the discs.

I doubt it - clearly no recovery partition, only recovery disks.

    Basic steps:
    1. Replace the hard drive.

    2. Borrow a Vista CD/DVD, the same version listed on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

    3. Boot the system from the Vista CD/DVD and follow the onscreen instructions.

    4. When the installation routine prompts you for the Product Key, use the one listed on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

    5. Then continue with the onscreen instructions.

    6. After Windows Vista is installed, try to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all available updates.
This step will usually get you most of the basic needed drivers, (sound, video, etc.).
