How to copy folder files that exceed one DVD

First some background, I use Genie Backup Manager to backup my data. When I submit a job, it tells me how many DVDs will be required to complete the job. However, during the backup a DVD burning software (originally installed with my PC - Cybersonic) window pops up, says there's a problem and I cancel it out. Then Genie Backup Manager quits a little later saying user aborted job. How do I stop this other program from invading my backup process? I even uninstalled it, and the popup windows still appears.

Because I can't get Genie to work I tried using other DVD burning software to do a straight copy of my data. But none of the software will span multiple disks; I downloaded about five different ones from CNET and thought one of them would allow a job to consist of multiple DVDs. I don't want to split my data into three or more single DVD size files to write one DVD for each.

What am I missing here? Is it me or the DVD burning software? Thanks for any help....

I can't see burning software called Cybersonic. There is (was) software made by Sonic and the burning program is Record Now. Check if you have only uninstalled part of the burning "suite".

The Sonic website sends you here for support:
http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/default.html
So look for any upgrades or patches
http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Gener...ation/000004GN
troubleshooting
http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Gener...ation/000008GN
and search for the wording that is in the error message.

Does the backup software control the optical drive itself or does it need to run using another (burning) program? You will need to learn how it works. Is it trying to say, make dual-layer (8GB) disks when the drive or disks are only single layer?

If you can arrange your data (into folders) that are less than 4GB. You could just burn those. That is the method I like, I am always dubious about spanning and I often find when it comes to getting the data back, that's also when you can get error messages and the data could be lost.

Depending on the type of files, can you compress them into archives like zip files (try 7-Zip)?

Consider getting an external HDD for backups which will overcome the size limitations, but HDDs can break down (check the cost per GB, you should find HDD space is cheaper than optical disks).

Thanks Matt for the info...I don't know if Genie backup manager requires a burner because I've never been able to complete the backup to dvd (have message in to them). Did download Ashampoo free DVD burner and it worked fine spanning three DVDs (but God was it slow). The Sonic (you were correct) didn't pop up and try to take over. I do have an external 1 terrabyte(?) hard drive that I use to backup. Got worried that if that drive should fail at least I would have disks. As long as Ashampoo is working, I'm happy, sort of. If Genie responds, and they usually do (very good), maybe the Genie problem will be fixed as well. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it so much. I have another odd problem that I'll be posting today, I'm lost without you and the other great folks on this board. Michelle

Oh good I'm glad you got it back on track

Ashampoo running slowly will be because you need to buy the full version to have normal function. Have a read here:
Free CD/DVD Burning Program for Vista?

Good luck with it.
