Is there any free CD/DVD burning program out there that's compatible with Vista and FREE that allows for copying CDs or DVDs? I don't want to pay the large $$$ to upgrade my Nero 6 that came with my ASUS drives. Any help would be appreciated!

    Hello Collee74,

From the Srart button, under All Programs, type DVD into the search area.

That will get you Vista's DVD Maker.

In the dialog box > Add Items: files/folders from Documents (Vista's My Documents), or Desktop/Computer. The procedure is fairly straightforward from there.

Just put blank CD/DVD disk in your DVD drive, close it, wait for a few seconds, and Windows pop-up will take care of you.

If you need other features, example:
I have found this one does just about everything I want:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/CDBurnerXP_d4242.html

    Haven't tried this one:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/DeepBurner_Free_d4055.html

    "Copy "?
Quotes are from Vista Help and Support.

    Matt
Edit: I see CDBurnerXP will do "Burn on the fly" which is copying disk to disk [I haven't used that feature].

It's true there are plenty of good, free - even open source - data burning programs, but programs which burn, say, downloaded video files specifically to DVDs in a manner that allows them to be played, say, on a dedicated DVD player are elusive, or expensive, or, if cheap, not at all user-friendly. F'rinstance, I just bought Ashampoo's cheapie (well, about US$25/GBP£12.50, with special offer discount) Burning Studio 7 for use on my wife's Vista Home Premium machine. It has just failed to burn two .avi files, exiting with a completely unhelpful message after about 2 hours each time. Bah!

So - can anyone recommend good, user-friendly, free, or not too expensive DVD burning software which actually does this kind of job (and preferably knows how to incorporate subtitles, too - in .srt files)?

 I do apologise Isrubi - you are right. On reading their help/faq stuff I see it claims to do exactly what I want (except no mention of subtitles). I'll give it a go!

I hope I'm not hijacking someone else's thread to no good effect - but on opening CDBurnerXP 4 for the first time - I see I only appear to have the options to create a data CD/DVD or burn an audio CD.

Are only these two apparently limited options being displayed to me because my own machine does not have a hardware DVD burner (I was planning to place the program on my wife's machine - which does)? It doesn't look like it. The options are limited, because, despite what it says in the help/faq online page - as far as I am aware, a data DVD is not playable in a standalone DVD player, only on another PC...

    @Mattman & Isrubi

Do forgive me, but, now having had a chance to play with it in Vista, I can find no facility to burn a video (as opposed to data) dvd using CDBurnerXP 4. Am I missing something obvious?

I can say, however, that Ashampoo Burning Studio 7, while apparently a bit primitive, is relatively cheap (well, compared to Nero), and does seem to kind of do the job - though I've yet to find out if it will cope with subtitle .srt files (it doesn't seem to want to recognise them for 'addition' - but it may, just, recognise them automatically - we'll see) :D

    Thanks Matt.

As far as I can tell from that forum - cdburnerXP does not do the job I wanted.

However, I have found what I need - copes with subtitles as well. It is ConvertXtoDVD - not all that cheap (30 eu over here), but does what it says, in a reasonably user-friendly manner.

    I don't understand what's going on here.
VISTA WILL BURN MOVIE DVDs WITH ITS OWN BURNING ABILITY!

    Please don't shout broni.

afaik - you can't burn a downloaded video file (eg, somemovie.avi) with an associated subtitle file (eg, somemovie.srt) to DVD, in a way that will play on a standalone DVD player, rather than one in a PC, with vanilla Vista.

If I'm wrong, please do correct me. I don't mind being told I've wasted my hard earned money if it stops others from making the same mistake.

I apologize for shouting, but before I got full version of Roxio, I burned several movie DVD using Vista built in Windows DVD Maker, and they play on regular DVD player.
It allows you also some editing, like movie title.
Just go to Windows Help, and type in "Windows DVD Maker ".

Brilliant! So that should help most people most of the time. If you don't need subtitles, then the built-in Windows DVD Maker is all you need. Likewise, on our Toshiba, there is another 'Toshiba' program supplied with the machine, which will also do it. Just scan through the Start - Programs list...
