Is there any free CD/DVD burning program out there that's compatible with Vista and FREE that allows for copying CDs or DVDs? I don't want to pay the large $$$ to upgrade my Nero 6 that came with my ASUS drives. Any help would be appreciated!

From the Srart button, under All Programs, type DVD into the search area.
That will get you Vista's DVD Maker.
In the dialog box > Add Items: files/folders from Documents (Vista's My Documents), or Desktop/Computer. The procedure is fairly straightforward from there.
An ISO image is a file that contains all the information necessary to duplicate the contents of a disc. You can't create a disc from an ISO image using Windows, but there are disc burning programs available with this ability.
Quote:
Use a music or video burning program to make playable discs. If you use Windows to copy music files to a disc, for example, they will be copied as files and will not play in most CD players.
In order to copy a disc, you need to copy all the files on that disc to your computer, and then choose those files for burning. In general, you can only copy personal data discs, because they are not copy protected.

Edit: I see CDBurnerXP will do "Burn on the fly" which is copying disk to disk [I haven't used that feature].

It's true there are plenty of good, free - even open source - data burning programs, but programs which burn, say, downloaded video files specifically to DVDs in a manner that allows them to be played, say, on a dedicated DVD player are elusive, or expensive, or, if cheap, not at all user-friendly. F'rinstance, I just bought Ashampoo's cheapie (well, about US$25/GBP£12.50, with special offer discount) Burning Studio 7 for use on my wife's Vista Home Premium machine. It has just failed to burn two .avi files, exiting with a completely unhelpful message after about 2 hours each time. Bah!
So - can anyone recommend good, user-friendly, free, or not too expensive DVD burning software which actually does this kind of job (and preferably knows how to incorporate subtitles, too - in .srt files)?

I do apologise Isrubi - you are right. On reading their help/faq stuff I see it claims to do exactly what I want (except no mention of subtitles). I'll give it a go!
I hope I'm not hijacking someone else's thread to no good effect - but on opening CDBurnerXP 4 for the first time - I see I only appear to have the options to create a data CD/DVD or burn an audio CD.
Are only these two apparently limited options being displayed to me because my own machine does not have a hardware DVD burner (I was planning to place the program on my wife's machine - which does)? It doesn't look like it. The options are limited, because, despite what it says in the help/faq online page - as far as I am aware, a data DVD is not playable in a standalone DVD player, only on another PC...
Do forgive me, but, now having had a chance to play with it in Vista, I can find no facility to burn a video (as opposed to data) dvd using CDBurnerXP 4. Am I missing something obvious?
I can say, however, that Ashampoo Burning Studio 7, while apparently a bit primitive, is relatively cheap (well, compared to Nero), and does seem to kind of do the job - though I've yet to find out if it will cope with subtitle .srt files (it doesn't seem to want to recognise them for 'addition' - but it may, just, recognise them automatically - we'll see)

new version 4.0.
As far as I can tell from that forum - cdburnerXP does not do the job I wanted.
However, I have found what I need - copes with subtitles as well. It is ConvertXtoDVD - not all that cheap (30 eu over here), but does what it says, in a reasonably user-friendly manner.
