    Hi,
I have had SpybotS&D installed on my computer for many years.
It normally runs very well and catches everything before it becomes a problem.
Recently I have been unable to open Spybot Search and Destroy in normal mode. When I go to Safe Mode it allows me to open and run Spybot S&D but there is a smalll window that appears telling me I have 6,000 running programs in my temporary folder and do I want to stop them running and I click on yes. Then it supposedly tries that but ends up telling me that all 6,000 are unable to stop because they are being used.
I suspect I have been hacked. Where do I go to find these temporary files and how do I eliminate this problem?

I should also mention that I recently purchased Spyhunter 4 and have run it often. However this is when my problems seemed to begin Ishould also mention that I cannot now open my carbonite folder or many other applications.

Sounds like your computer may be infected with some type of malware, (malicious software). Recommend starting with these instructions and then posting the requested log(s) in our Malware and Virus Removal forum.

After your computer has been given a clean bill of health by one of our malware experts, if you are still having the same issue then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help solve the problem.

    Hi Spyware DR.,
I did download and run all the malware removal in the order you recommended. ...more than three times.
But still every time I start Spybot SD am told I have 5,892 processes in my temporary folder and when I click on empty the message comes back that 5,692 could NOT be stopped or emptied or whatever is going on. Normally I am told I may have 100 or so processes .
Then when I click on empty I end up with only 2 or 3 that are in use . But now it says that there are 5,692 in use.
Is there some place I can go in SysConfig or regedit to look for corrupt or attached files?

There has to be a way to view all of these 5,692 files spybot SD is referring to and see what anomaly they all have in common so I can alter the text.
I even have Spyhunter 4 and that is not picking them up so there is definitely something hidden somewhere that is attaching to my files...
Or does Carbonite file Backup have something to do with this problem???? Maybe it keeps the files Live for some reason in order to constantly back them up??? Just can't figure this one out.

Thanks to Broni I went thru a thorough cleaning and I am certain my initial problem was corrected.

However ...now when...let's say...I open the Start menu and right click on something like maybe Windows Mail or Disk Cleanup or really anything listed My cursor sits and spins sometimes for over 5 minutes. I usually have to hit Control Alt. Delete to bring up the task Manager so I can highlight the function and close it.....Funny thing is that after I do that I can then go right back to the function in the Start menu and it will respond immediately.
This problem is not isolated to the Start menu. Most times it is anything on my computer I want to access this hanging up happens..

    This has never happened before....

Also something keeps shutting down my Carbonite engine ...I will close the warning and a few minutes later it just simply appears again. Like it is truly stuck on irritating...So basically I have gone thru Carbonite Tech support and requested a purge and reinstall. I am currently waiting for the response the initial contact said would come after I requested it.

HI blakston6286, You have a slow start to programs. I would suggest that you wait till Evan can look in as he will be able to assist with what/how many things are starting in your comp and possibly slowing it down. Neil.

OK thanks Retiredlearner...Thank you for the communication

I also have a continuous problem with a Microsoft alert Window constantly popping till I delete the message. ...I play a lot of online games in STEAM and the games I am constantly being disconnected with the games because the message windows pops up...
This never happened before. I am thinking somehow some process I used with the cleaning started some kind of goofy alert system I don't care about. And this process keeps turning off my Carbonite Engine and a few other process as well because Carbonite is NOT the only alert I get.

Edit: I do not know how this thread got intertwined with a thread I started awhile back that got me to go thru the cleaning process in Malware and Virus Forum.
This thread was actually started as a NEW THREAD...Computer Hanging up when opening functions.....How in the world did it end up here????

Lets see what is starting up with your machine.

Please download Autoruns. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted open the regular folder. Run the autoruns.exe program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When you open the program click the Logon Tab and then post a screenshot of all the startup entries in your next reply.

Then download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When the program opens select the following boxes:

    Flush DNS
    Reset FF proxy Settings
    Reset IE Proxy Settings
    Report IE Proxy Settings
    Report FF Proxy Settings
    List content of Hosts
    List IP configuration
    List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
    List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
    List Devices (problems only)

Click the Go button and if asked post the MiniToolBox log in your next reply.

Because I merged it with your thread that you originally started here. There is no need to create a new thread when this is the same machine and we are currently working on trying to resolve your issues with your Vista system.

OK Thanks for the explanation. ...
I will follow these instructions and post the results as you asked.

Well I tried to download the folder of autorun on my desk to but I never was given the choice where to download it to and that is disturbing because i have always been offered the choice.

The same happened with mini toolbox.exe....They both ended up being downloaded in my browser...and all I am allowed to do is click and Run from there.
The bad news is that when I close my browser they will be deleted.

Some where somehow something has changed all my settings....just seems to be another irritation in an ongoing growing number of irritations.

Have you had a look at the Steam web site as every time I look there, there are bugs causing users all sorts of problems. Neil.

I have been on STEAM for 10 years and Never had a bug site problem...I have also read the problems from the STEAM site and they have always been with people who cheap out on components..Not the case here...

My Steam games have just now started popping out immediately when this Microsoft Window generates. It takes over whatever function I happen to be involved with at the moment and whether it is a game I am playing or a cleanup processes or just doing my banking or what have you. And functions remain paused or minimized to the task bar till I click on close for this Window.

This is a bothersome function that has just now appeared since I did the massive cleaning. It was non existent before the cleaning process.
So maybe some kind of alert program by Microsoft was reactivated or installed during the Clean up process. I don't know.

For example I have Carbonite. Before Carbonite worked in the background backing up my files. Now when Carbonite is finished for the moment I get this message that the Carbonite Engine has stopped working and Microsoft is working on a solution for this problem and will notify me when it has found one.

Now.....I do not know if it is just a notification error because Carbonite does stop backing up my files when they are done , and this may be interpreted incorrectly as a flaw or my Carbonite may be actually switching off midstream. I will never know because when I go to my Carbonite there doesn't seem to be a problem...But I have requested a reinstall from Carbonite just in case it has been corrupted...

But here is the problem. If I have acquired a corrupted Microsoft alert process it will now be included in my backup AFTER the reinstall and I will have a problem that will perpetuate itself.

Soooooo basically I need to find just what was installed that is claiming to be a Microsoft product that is generating these intrusive notices.

I would take a snapshot of this window but I have tried to copy and paste it but it will not let me. So maybe I can describe it.

    Here Goes:

Imagine a tiny window on a 60" HD TV about 5 inches long and 3 inches tall...

there is a very light blue border around the window

At the top of the very light blue border on the left side there is the Microsoft Windows logo With the words Microsoft Windows printed next to it.

On the right side corner of the border there are the three functions ..dash for minimize ..square for enlarge..and the x for close.

The x is the only function that actually works when I click on it.

Within the Windo... is a message displayed in a larger light blue print Carbonite Secure Backup Engine stopped working and was closed.

In a smaller sized black print below that message there is printed: A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available.

On the bottom of the inside window is a very light grey shaded area with a Blue button with the black printed words Close within the button.the C of the word Close has an underline under it. Like this Close

If I am typing this response and this window pops up the window stops my typing and demands attention.

This is exactly what happens when I am playing a game on STEAM the game minimizes to the task bar automatically and involuntarily and until I close the Microsoft window I am not allowed to continue with the game....The game does continue running but I am not allowed access till I close the window. So if I am (and have been) in the middle of a combat or a cut away scene the game plays on and I am not allowed back in to fight or hear the dialogue till I close the Microsoft Window and restore the minimized to task bar screen.

Never has this ever happened with any of my computers while on BBS or STEAM or any function.
But now it is a common occurrence.

    What could this problem be.

Carbonite is only one of the functions I get random notices about There are other functions like Secunia etc that pop up randomly. I was not aware these other functions were even running because I do not know how to set my running programs. and which ones are necessary.....

You did not see this , but right now as I was typing the word Necessary the Microsoft Window reappeared and I was typing but no letters appeared till I closed the notice.

And this notice is a notice that my Carbonite Engine has stopped working...I got this message 5 minutes ago and closed it but I guess it did not think I heard them so they repeated the message.
    Artificial Unintelligence at its best.

Evan...I had been using a cleaned and upgraded Firefox but the cleaning process wiped out all my book marks and left me with an Internet Explorer and a Firefox with NO book marks period so I have to use the older version of Firefox and IE because I have 200 essential bookmarks I have no idea how to reacquire and cannot remember half of them because I just use the bookmark to get from here to there.
