Windows Vista Very slow laptop

My wifes Dell laptop has been running ver very slow for a while now. She has a clock on the desktop with a revolving globe as the face, on my pc the globe revolves smoothly, on hers it is jerky.
Frequently the laptop will hang for several minutes you can move the cursor around but can't open anything the clock will stop and the cpu meter will hang, then it will just come back to life.
I ran disk cleanup this morning and after clicking on it the screen goes blank for 30 seconds then it ask me which disk to clean up, I select C then the screen goes blsnk for a whille and then it starts, it then takes about an hour. Defrag runs so long, seven or eights hours but usualy hangs before getting to the end, any help please.

Still problems with slow laptop

I have spent several days with the mailware fourum and have had the pc declared clean, but I still have the problems.
After using the laptop for a few minutes this morning I clicked to close an email I was reading, and everything froze, the clock stopped the CPU meter was frozen and although I could move the cursor around the sceen I could not click on anything. After seven minutes it all came back to life, the email closed and everything was normal.
Later I clicked on start to close the machine down and got the menu but it was greayed out and as before it all locked out except I could move the cursor around. This time it came back to life after two minutes. This has been happening for sometime. Any help appreceited.

Couple of questions:

1. How hot are the CPU, System and Hard Drive?
   You can check with SpeedFan​
2. Does the Hard Drive pass a Diagnostic?
   To run the diags, download and burn the Ultimate Boot CD to CD. It has all the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utilities, (plus much more). Simply boot your computer from this CD and select the utility you want to run.
   
   If you aren't sure who made the hard drive in your computer, use Seagate's Seatools as it will work with most any make of drive.

I don't seem to be able to download SpeedFan or Ultimate Boot CD, when I click on download it either downloads &zip or Free Music.
I don't think the laptop is running hot because the hangs normaly occure soon after it is first switched on in the morning When it has been on for an hour or so it seems ok.

The laptop does seem to be faster in safe mode.

 

Personally, the only thing I can see there is a potential conflict between Mcafee and Malwarebytes. I'd try disabling one or the other using autoruns and see if there's an improvement. Alternatively, uninstall one or the other - really depends on whether you've paid for a subscription to either one which one you pick.

 

Malwarebytes was only installed a few days ago following instructions from the clean up forum. The hangin problem started seeral weeks ago.

 

What about the Ultimate Boot CD that does not seem to download?

 

Then bin Mcafee. Thats never a bad suggestion anyway. Mcafee could also be blocking the download, although to be fair, I'd say that'd be unusual. You could try downloading it either using another browser or another computer (if you have access to one). Alternatively, get someone you know to download it for you. Just be sure you're trying to get it from the right place.

 

I have deleted Malwarebytes and have tried your link but on clicking download it wants to download something called 7zip. I have tried it on another PC but get the same.

That's because you must have clicked on the big orange download rectangle which is an ad for 7zip (nothing wrong with 7zip BTW!!)
