Controling Start Screen

    Is it possible to select which pictures appear in the photo slideshow, which news site open up when news is clicked, etc.

    No, AFAIK you can only turn the slideshow on or off, not select which pictures to show. Mind you, I haven't spend more than 3 minutes with any "Metro" cr@p apps, so I could be wrong.

    As for news, it will (obviously?) open the news item that was displayed when you click on it.

    Thank you for your response, Arie.
    The slideshow selects the pictures from somewhere. I still think it should be possible to predetermine where.
    Clicking on a news item opens up a blank news window that doesn't update.
    Ever onward, anyone?

    Yea, the pictures from the slideshow come from many places. You can exclude some of 'em.

    Sounds like your News app is 'borked', you could try uninstalling and then reinstall it.

    Thanks again Arie, makes sense that the app is glitched.
    Tried a reinstall of the news app and another that seemed defective (travel) but unfortunately no difference. Assuming now that they are not connecting with the source page. Will unpin them and wait to see if they work at a later time.
    Regarding the slideshow, where would I go to exclude pictures?
    Appreciated.

    I am missing something, lol. Clicking on app opens it but there is nothing that I can find which enables the selection or de-selection of pictures. Actually nothing that relates to the slideshow on the tile. More please?

    Well, the settings appear on both my Win8 systems (as shown in the picture attached to post #4. So with your other troubles you have with your apps, I think you need a new/clean install/repair.

    Windows 8 introduces two new options to recover your system: Refresh and Reset. With Refresh you basically reload Windows without losing your data or apps you downloaded from the Windows store.

    Type refresh while you are on the Start screen, select Settings and click the result Refresh your PC.

    Thanks again Arie, assistance appreciated, but the settings that you have posted in reply #4 do not appear for me. Shall continue my investigation a bit longer before resorting to refreshing the installation.

    To continue .... Have done a refresh but no cigar. Photos ... live tile works but now will not open, minimizes and will not go to full screen. Also Travel ... live tile works but when clicked open to full screen but does not connect to any web site. Going to try to find these items in the app store then uninstall both followed by downloading app and reinstalling.

    Ever onward, ever upward, tally ho .......
