Hello everyone. Relatively new to this forum, and was referred by a friend to see if anyone could help find a solution to my computer problem.

My computer is an HP Pavillion Desktop, Model # p6331p with an added 9800 GTX+. I usually use it for gaming, and it's on for most of the day everyday.

Basically whenever I boot my computer, it will run like usual until after the HP startup screen where you can press F12 to go to the BIOS utility menu. After that it just shows a black screen with a flashing white dash in the upper left corner. I have literally tried everything I can think of. I've tried system restore three times along with startup repair, and neither have worked. I think it has something to do with my HD from what I've already read from other sources. The OS is corrupted, I can't be sure, though. And since my computer already have W7 installed already, I can't put a disc in to reboot it. I've opened up the case and reconnected the sata cables, which also didn't work.

I honestly don't know what else to do. I'll welcome any answer at this point, and I appreciate in advance all the help.

Hi Molav, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

When you boot up the computer have you tried pressing F8 on startup and selecting Last Known Good Configuration?

Have you tried booting the computer in Safe Mode?

Have you gone into the computers BIOS and made sure that the harddrive was recognized?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Thank you for the welcome, Evan. :)

Well I ran a system diagnostics and everything checked according to it, hard drive and all. It shows up in the BIOS menu as well. Pressing F8 unfortunately doesn't do anything, and it won't give an option to operate in safe mode. The only time it will do anything different is if I have the recovery disc in the drive. Other than that it's just the black screen with a flashing white dash.

You have to keep taping the F8 Key as soon as you turn on your PC. Not just press it.

I've pressed it many times as soon as it started. Nothing happens, other than what it usually does.

Flashing white dash normally indicates, that your drive should be OK.

How did you actually try system restore, if you can't pass HP logo screen?

It may be a different F KEY. Does it give you any F options when you boot up?

I used a W7 recovery disc. If it's in the drive, the dash will be replaced with it saying to press any key to boot the CD drive. It'll then go to the recovery menu and give me options on what to do, but none seem to work at all.

HP definitely uses F8 key to access Safe Mode.

Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.

Please download OTLPE (filesize 120,9 MB)

    • When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
    • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
      • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE
    • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
    • Depending on your type of internet connection, you should be able to get online as well so you can access this topic more easily.
    • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
    • When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
    • When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
    • Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
    • OTL should now start.
    • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
    • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
    • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
    • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

F10 is for the BIOS menu, F11 is for System recover and F9 is Diagnostics. Those are the only ones I see when it boots up. F11 doesn't do anything, and F9 will just run a test on the hardware and tell me everything is supposedly working.

Like Boni said, HP is F8. You have to tap it like a machine gun firing, is the easiest way to put it.
I just tried it on 2 different HP machines that I am working of for somebody.

I did as you said, but when I put the disc in the drive and it finishes loading, it gives me the BSOD. F8 also doesn't work still.

How far does the booting from OTLPE CD go and what does BSOD say?

Are you sure, you're booting from the CD?
If so, try to boot the computer, you're posting from with the same CD, so we know, the CD is good.

7B error may be caused by an infection (rootkit).

My bed time is coming, so I'll check on you tomorrow...

Well it took awhile, but the CD does work.

I appreciate the help from both of you so far. Hopefully this will resolve itself soon enough. I need to head off as well, though. Until tomorrow.
