Why not simply delete the file?

    What kind of file?

For example, if it's a document, picture or music file, just delete it.

Or if it's a shortcut to open a program, you should uninstall the program.

If i delete the file, then when I type in the web site again, the corrupt part is still there. I want to permanently disable the file (and icon). Harri

The file I am referring is my bank's file, which I bring up through an icon on my desktop. Up until a couple of weeks ago, when I clicked on a cashed check on the bank's web site I was able to see a picture of the cashed check plus its endorsement. Now when I click on that check nothing happens. The bank clerk told me that the file is probably corrupt. Harri

If you can get to the bank with no problem, I would almost say it was a bank problem. You click on a check and the banks software should open it up, not your PC. You could just delete the shortcut to the icon and go straight to the bank and make a new one. After you delete the shortcut to the bank do a disc cleanup thru Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.
Put a check in ALL the boxes then do it. Then reboot and go back to the bank website and try it again.
