Sorry if I wasn't clear on what I had done. I had gotten a good deal on a hard drive at about the same time the thing hosed, so I pulled the old drive and started over with a new install on the new drive. I have since moved some files from the old drive to the new, so it is conceivable that I have some corrupted files on the new drive, but what I moved were my documents files, Outlook stuff and the like. I have belarc. Would you like me to paste a report?

    Hi fridgitator,

Ok, then the situation is as I originally thought. That's why I listed the earliest KB's in my post. If you have any question about the install, then do it again.

I would at this point follow Belarc's list from the earliest to latest and go thru the list and install - if some won't - bypass and we'll see what's left.

The Belarc "missing" list should be a long report and I would be curious to see it :)

    Regards - Charles

    Indeed it is

These required security hotfixes (using the 06/13/2006 Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary) were not found installed. Note: CIS benchmarks require that Critical and Important severity security hotfixes must be installed.

    Hi fridgitator,

Why are you googling? I understand it may be hard to use the Catalog list if you have a lot to download and googling may be easier. Once you're thru that, then it is easy to use for the latest updates.

I found some of these listed under XP SP1, I hope you haven't been looking under XP Professional SP1 - I didn't look for them all obviously.

Looked for these three and found them.

I would also concentrate on the Criticals and leave the rest for later if wanted.

This is really odd. When I checked the updates earlier, it always offered me about a dozen. After intalling onefrom the four you listed earlier, it now offers me over two hundred. I guess it was a good one!

I really like the "Charlesvar Approach " to updates and although I've been a big Microsoft Fan for quite some time, lets just say that I'm not leaning in that direction at all these days. Corporations move slowly and are calculated in their approach to various issues, so I have to conclude that they new full well what they were doing and studied the potental repercussions before reaching a decision to deploy WGA. Perhaps this signals a changing of the guard at Microsoft - I don't know and I'll leave that for others to decide but it sure sends a clear signal that its time for me to cover my backside. Another series of Microsoft Updates is scheduled to be released next week but I won't be among those downloading or installing them.

I'll be trying to get up to speed with the CA (Charlesvar Approach) and I've got a lot of others to educate regarding this approach too. Not to worry, the job will get done but what a PITA - just what we all need. I also stumbled across another little gem from Brian Livingston of Windows Secrets fame which is not a freebie but will provide all Microsoft updates, independent of Microsoft. For those that might be interested, the link can be found here.

    fridgitator - excellent thread ...

    ;)

edit: guess i need to thank Jerry Dun too

    Save Windows Update Downloads

One of Arie's sub articles on XP. Spotted it way back in Feruary of '02 and said to myself, that's for me :D

I was fed up with 9X's AU.

Christer is the only other person around here that uses the Catalog site that I know of.

I think Jerry got more than he bargained for :)

    Regards - Charles
