Resolved Windows 7 is not recognizing my DVD or CD ROM

I changed my computer from XP to Windows 7. I just noticed that it is not recognizing my DVD nor CD ROM drives. I tried to download drivers but it is confusing on the internet. They want me to buy some program. I thought dowloads were free.
I have Lite-On DVD/CD Rewriteable Drive (Model LH-20A1S15C). My CD ROM Lite-On (Model DH-20A4H08C). I looked at the Device Manager and it gave me this comment; "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damage (code 19) ".

Will I have to go by another DVD or CD Rom? I don't mind paying the money, but I don't want to buy something that I do not need when there may be a fix. That's is the reason I am checking with you guys and girls first. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

When you go to the Device Manager, is there a yellow ? or ! by the drive? If so you need to get the right driver for the device.

 

Yes there is a ! next to both of them.

 

That means that there are no drivers installed and it won't work. Usually Windows will install a generic driver to get it to work. Click on it and tell it to update and let it go on line to see if it can find any drivers, or look in Windows updates and see if you see a driver for it.

 

Yes sir. I already did that and windows is telling me that they are up to date.

 

I looked at it again and it told me my driver software is up to date.

OK..I right clicked and unstalled the drive. Now when you say reboot I turned off my system and waited a few minutes and let the computer reboot. Did I do that right.

 

It said that "ATAPI DVD A DH20A4H ATA INSTALLED DRIVERS FAILED" Said to contact manufacture.

 

Start\Run(type: regedit) navigate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} In the right pane delete UpperFilters and LowerFilters. Back Up Your Registry before making any changes. Restart your computer

 

Sorry PeteC I was making sure I had the navigation path correct. Haven't had use that in a long time.

 

Made a clean install to Windows 7.
LJ50, I navigated the pass that you gave me. When I got to the class there were about 24 {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} listed. There were about 5 of them that listed UpperFilters but no LowerFilters. Would I delete "UpperFilters in all 5?

 

First try clicking on PeteC's link scroll down and choose Resolution #2 Use the CD/DVD Fix it troubleshooter then click on the Plus sign(+) on the second option Fix It for Windows 7, Vista and XP click on Run Now. When it finishes. Restart the computer. If that doesn't fix the issue. Then try manually editing the registry. The registry key that I directed you to, that procedure is also listed in the link PeteC gave you. I checked my registry and that key nor the sub keys have UpperFilter or LowerFilter listed in any of them.

 

Yes! Yes! Yes! I went down the line on the reply Pete gave me. I got to # 4 and then decided to try and delete the drives again and restart my computer. Don't know what I did not do before but this time windows installed the drivers and they worked!!
To tell you the truth I finally got in contact with Lite-on rep and he said that my recorders were old and they were not compatible with windows 7. I been working on this all day so that sounded right. I went and purchased some new ones, but I am going to take them back. Thank you both for such a quick reply and putting up with my not knowing that much about computers. You guys are awsome!! Thanks again!
