Don't know what happened - DVD drive working again - could it be the disks that I was trying to burn to? Memorex 16X DVD-R?

    Thanks

    Good news :)
I've seen some users having to remove InCD and run the InCD cleanup tool
    to address the problem
But in your case, what ain't broke, don't try and fix it

    Could very well be
I was trying to burn Knoppix on my laptop, no if,ands, or butts
It was not going to burn the ISO on the media I had
The CD's work ok on my other comps. however
Coincidentally, I purchased Memorex blanks and had no problems burning the ISO after that, go figure

I just wanted a double check of the other users logs
Sometimes the 017 entries may appear under another users profile
    But your ok

    This entry in your log
    O16 - DPF: {E53458D2-5A83-4BD1-8DE2-EEEBE73BAB77} - http://dinet.info/n/us14/n.cab

It's seems a bad guy, I downloaded the cab file related to the link
    Had it scanned
Can you log off all other users on your computer
    except for yourself

Run a "SCAN" only with Hijackthis
Put a tick next to this entry
    O16 - DPF: {E53458D2-5A83-4BD1-8DE2-EEEBE73BAB77} - http://dinet.info/n/us14/n.cab

With all other windows closed, Including this one
    Click the FIX CHECKED button
    Ok any prompts
    Reboot your computer

Post one last hijackthis log from your profile please

Are you still running the trial verison of BitDefender?
Or did you purchase the product?
There are free AV's you can run, you only want ONE AV running it's realtime protections however, as to not cause conflicts with each other
    and cause system instabilities
    Let us know

Concerning clicking Links, is this just with IE7?
    IE7 is a bit different than IE6
It now has tabbed browsing, could it be that the link is opening in a new tab in the background?
Can you temporarily try disabling your popupblockers and see if that resolves the issue
Don't forget, IE7 also has a builtin popup blocker
    TOOLS>>Popup Blocker

Seeing the relationship of the file I scanned
Would you mind posting a different log also
Download the latest version of SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with the fresh hijackthis log
By default, the log is located Here>>C:\Rapport.txt

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I believe the Smitfraudfix log will come back clean, just as a double check

I still have the Trial version of Bit Defender which is not protecting in real time (it's expired) but I use Freedom Anti Virus supplied by my internet supplier. Of all the AV that I have used, BD is the only one that picks up the Trojan MohbPork with its scan.

I was using AVG - but yet to block or get a hit on any virus, so I removed it and went with Freedom, I tried Norton but it didn't work for the above trojan niether.

Is there a way to actually add this trojan to a list on Freedom to block before it gets in? And why is it now showing up in system 32 when it previously was showing in system restore?

I disabled both popup and ad blockers from Freedom and IE7. There were no differences after I disabled IE7 but when I disabled Freedom, clicks on links worked again. Now, This leads me to another issue, do I just rely on IE7 and keep Freedom disabled (it also has a ad blocker too). I am toooooo paranoid now.

    Anyways - clicking away!!

Again - Many Thanks! From a Canadian Maritimer

    Thank You!!!!!!

    Hi Temerc and indmusic,

It seems that all is well, however, wondering if you both could have a final look at the logs that I have posted.

Click problem is fixed ( related to Freedom popup blocker) everything is working fine (even the drive).

I really want to thank you for your help - you should be commended for your unselfish thoughtfulness and expertise as advisors to these forums. With every dark cloud - sometimes you have to dig to find the silver lining. As with computer security, once breached - it takes the enjoyment out of what I do. Thanks to you both, it is nice to know that even though the bad guys get in every now and then, folks like yourselves are there to turn the tide.

Many Many Thanks for a job well done

Sorry for not getting back to you right away

I'm glad to hear you have things running good
You still may want to do the following
    Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
    Create a New restore point
    Name it and click create
    When that's done

    Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
    cleanmgr
    Hit OK
    Let if finish calculating

    Select the 'More Options' tab
and click Clean up.. under System Restore
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

I suggest that you use the following tool to help prevent spyware on your computer
    SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    • *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
    After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection "
"Check for updates every couple of weeks "
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items "

Also, utilize the Immunization feature within Spybot
Simply click Immunization>>Ok>>Immunize at the top green cross
Check for Immunization after every update
To be on the safe side, I would have all user accounts enable the protections above

Afterwards, Your version of Sun Java is a bit out of date
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system
==Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications ".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement ".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation Multi-language
Save the file to your Desktop.
    Don't install it yet

    Open your Windows Control panel
Double click to open the Java icon
Under the General tab click the "Delete Files" button
Leave all 3 selections checked and hit OK

Access your Add/remove programs via Control Panel
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE or Java 2 Runtime Environment.... )
    As eg...
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
They should have the coffee cup looking icon next to it:
    Select it and click Remove

    Reboot your computer

Go ahead and install the latest version of Sun Java from the Installer on your desktop
You can delete the installer afterwards
You can also manually delete some of the tools we had you download

*Silent Runners.vbs and the log it produced
    *Combofix.exe and it's log>>C:\Combofix.txt,
Also the following folder if found C:\QooBox <-folder
    *Killbox.exe and it's backup folder C:\!killbox <-folder
    *Smitfraudfix.zip and the Smitfraudfix folder
    It's log C:\Rapport.txt
    *FixWareout and it's folder C:\FixWareout <-folder
    *C:\blbeta.exe

Decide which AV your happiest with
If the trial is expired, up to you to keep it or not
If it won't update, but only scan, it won't be of much use in the future
But ensure to keep Your regular AV updated and active
Keep in mind, only have one AV's realtime protections running

Hold onto Ad-Aware, along with Spybot 1.4 and update and run scans occasionally

I hope that helps, TeMerc may have more to add
    Take care Dcmurray :)

    Missing file

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSINET.OCX

An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file:
    DeleteFile failed; code 5
    Access is denied.

I received this message when I tried to download Spyware blaster as instructed. I aborted and will wait for further instructions.

Thanks for all your assistance on this one indmusic, greatly appreciated.

Altho I also suggest SpywareBlaster, I prefer to use IE-Spyad for a 'restricted zone' type of protection. The databse is likely about 4 times that of SBs.

And also see the rest of my suggestions below.

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.5.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.

    Happy surfing!!

    I guess thats it!!

OK - We've finally reached the end!!!! Yeah!!!

You should probably consider this case closed. Although, I have a feeling that I may show up again. I'm as dumb as a bag of hammers when it comes to computers and to identify myself as a beginner is really stretching it.

More accurately, I'm beginning to be a beginner.

I have followed the recommendations as instructed and although frustrated when I first started here, I found myself looking forward to the next post.

My background is construction and aviation, so although I would like to offer something in return for your assistance, Arizona is bit far to travel to. Besides, there are really big snakes there.

However, if there is anything that I could help you both with, please email me, and I will do my best to try and help.

Good Luck (especially with extremely long winded posts)
