Thanks JR, that's quite a list, impressive, and informative.

I found items I have checked: ehtray (U) which is part of the Media Center and ifrmewrk (Y) which is associated with Intel PRO set wireless and ccApp (Y) are required.

The others: tfowctrl; ccApp; ctfmon; OFUSBS; and cfgwiz. I found that 1, 3, and 4 are associated with windows. And they say cfgwiz is a resource hog.

I also found that ctfmon (required by Office XP language puts itself back on when used. Also, it is associated with viruses and if not needed can be disabled in Control Panel. Another learning curve...lol

MS made the startup listing box so small you can’t read what they are associated with (no way to maximize the box either) so with this list I was able to see the association.

Thanks a lot - have a great day.

deg9814--You should probably keep ccapp checked. That is Norton AV's Auto Protect.

If you have Spybot S&D, I find its startup manager more convenient than msconfig. Use Spybot in advanced mode, then tools, system startup.

Let me offer the advice that you do nothing.

If your computer is working acceptably dont't fix it.

Using Google to determine whether a process is needed or not seems highly risky.

Let the Antivirus and Anti-malware folks earn their keep and keep your definitions up to date and your schedule set for regular thorough scans.

To clean up anything, use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and the native Disk Cleanup utility.

    Thanks Bill.

I like the do nothing reply...laughing. My speed was unacceptable.

Anti-Virus current and on schedule. Using Norton Anti-Virus & Firewall.
I regularly do the Disk Cleanup and defrag.

At first I was having cable connection drops. The company came out and rewired the old connection. With the new laptop I was wireless and that speed was unacceptable. So I disconnected and did a direct hookup to cable. Much improvement but still speed was unacceptable.

Cleaning out MSCONFIG has helped immensely. I don't need all that junk Dell puts in startup.

I work on genealogy (hunting dead people at Ancestry.com... :)) and the speed with which the census images came in was unacceptable. This led to increasing the Temp. File Cache to 3300 before the above problems.

With all these changes my download speed is now 4300 kbps and the upload speed is 458 kbps which is acceptable.

I will be moving into a small apt. (someday) and travel a little, so I thought a laptop would be ideal. Oh how I yearn for my desktop again!

    Dell Inspiron 9300 Laptop, Pentium M750 (1,86GHz/533MHz FSB), True Life 17" Wide Screen UXGA, 1GB, DDR@, 533MHz 2 Dimm,
128MB ATI and Mobility Radeon X300, 80GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive, Integrated 10/10 network Card and Modem. MS Media Play Edition.

deg9814--It is pretty hard to go wrong with the recommendation by JRosenfeld to use
    http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html
Unchecking an item from the msconfig|Startup list does not mean deleting the program. You can always start it manually when you want.
