My tech skills are leaving me faster than both my ex-wives.

I’m staying with a friend while my house gets remodeled….. She just switched from Spectrum to AT&T Fiber.

She has an older HP computer with Windows 8 and an AMD E1-2500 cpu.
I’m using a little newer Dell with Windows 10 and an I5 cpu.

    When we go to www.SpeedTest.net
Her Pc is getting 30 to 40 mbps
    I’m getting 690 to 930 mbps.

I've started Googling and so far have only come up with changing the DNS that didn't help. AT&T was here yesterday and can't help with pc issue.... Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I disabled the wired connection on both and enabled wireless.

Her pc was unbearable... I think maybe 1 mbps.
    My pc hit 47 mbps.

I ran the built in Network Diagnosis. Saw error about DNS not responding.... Set the pc back to auto detect. No Help.

Disable BitDefender and the error went away.... Still looking into this.

BitDefender is mostly disabled......and no error about DNS not responding.
Her upload speed is 95 mbps.
Turning on both TV's cuts her 30 to 40 mbps in half.
Does anyone think a new network card would help? Or do we think the very slow CPU might be the culprit?

    LOL

The fact you got 690+Mbps says the network works great. So the problem is with her computer, assuming she connects without going through any additional devices. So how is she connecting now? If by Ethernet, swap cables. Ethernet cables are cheap, flimsy, easily damaged but critical network devices. Ethernet ports on routers can go bad too. Try a different port.

Check her network card specs - make sure it supports 1000Mbps networks. In Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Properties, then click the Properties button under the network and make sure it says Link speed (Receive/Transmit): 1000/1000 (Mbps).
So she is connecting via wireless?

Is she using the original wifi adapter? What protocols does it support? If not at least 11n, then for sure I would get a new adapter for it that supports 11ac or 11ax. And preferably a dual band and if possible, then move her to the 5GHz band. I prefer one with an external antenna like this.

Having said all that the fact her bandwidth is dismal with both Ethernet and wifi suggests other problems. Perhaps it is full of clutter and needs a good cleaning with Windows Disk Cleanup or CCleaner. Make sure there is a sufficient supply of free disk space. What other security is she running? Windows Defender is plenty good for most users.

Most cat 5 are only wired 2 ways. Don't know why he says it was wrong or it should not have worked period.

I doubt that. As MrBill said, if wired wrong, it never would have worked.

And was it really CAT5 or was it CAT5e? Big difference despite their similar names. CAT5 has a theoretical top bandwidth of 100Mbps while CAT5e is 1000Mbps. In any case, I hope he replaced it with CAT6 or better.

The guy from AT&T gave her a new piece of CAT5....
Her card is a 10/100 so I went out and bought a USB Gigabyte Adaptor. No joy....
Saw an I3 lappy for $399 that is starting to look good.

On the other hand, her Zoom meeting went well with the TV's turned off....

Maybe she should choose a different TV-channel provider?

My ISP has no connection with my TV-channel provider ... ... apart from the fibre connection. Having a TV turned on doesn't affect the bit-rate of the internet connection.

She did have Spectrum and had major Pixelation problems on the TV.... Thus the main reason for the switch.

FWIW, I have an old Acer laptop that, no matter what I do, can only hit 30-35 Mbps while my Desktop hits 700+ connected to the same Cat5e Ethernet wire. <shrug> :)

    Thanks Doc....
Her pc is an HP Slimline..... So replacing the NIC would require a low profile one etc...... BUT, I did a lot of cleanup and shutting down of unneeded stuff..... She says the pc is a lot better!!!!

When connnected to my 1Gbps Verizon FIOS via Wi-Fi, my little 2015 HP "Stream 7" Trouchscreen 7" Tablet (W10H32) maxes out at 42 Mbps down, 24 Mbps up (speedtest.net).

    Pretty good for an
    Intel Atom Z3735G quad-core 1.33 GHz
    1GB RAM, 32GB flash, 32GB microSD
Intel HD Graphics, 1280x800 eIPS LCD
2 MP rear and 0.3MP front cameras
    Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, Miracast
3000 mAh battery. (On sale for $99 in 2015)

Course you almost gotta smash it up against your face to be able to read it. ;)
