Open Windows Explorer or My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View >

Check the box labeled "Show hidden files and folders "

Uncheck the boxes labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operation system files "

    OK out of there.

Click on the folder named System Volume Information to open it. Delete all files that it shows.

It worked! I had to go into Safe Mode since in Windows XP some other program was using the files and wouldn't let me delete them. In Safe Mode I got repeated warnings about deleting certain ini files without which the computer might not work, but it restarted just fine and I have regained all the lost space. Thanks for your help!
