Update: Monitor arrived and installed. Have to get use to it. If I try the highest resolution, the letters are so tiny I can't read them. Have to keep it at a lower resolution.

I do not use the computer for Internet.....so I think I am safe.

Flat screen monitors are designed to run at their native resolution and reducing this may cause a deterioration in the quality of the display. Your new flat screen has a far higher resolution than the monitor it replaces, hence everything is smaller.

Rather than reduce the resolution I suggest you go into Control Panel > Display tab and select the Settings tab. Click on the Advanced button and in the General tab select a larger dpi setting and see how that works for you.
If the computer is not connected to the internet that is fine, but be careful when transferring files to it from an unknown source - even if that source is a friend :)

Pete - I show two available DPI settings 96 which I now have and 120. There is a custom setting but I do not know how big I can go without doing any harm. Any suggestions for my old eyes? LOL!

The computer is connected to the Internet, but don't I have to open a browser and go to a web page to be vulnerable?

Have you tried 120 dpi with the monitor set at the max (native) resolution of 1920 x 1080?

In the custom setting you can drag the ruler to increase the dpi and a sample of the enlarged text is shown. You will not do any harm by setting the size quite large, but be aware that the size of everything changes including the dialogue boxes and if you go too big the OK, Cancel, Apply buttons will no longer be visible and you have a problem! So small steps at a time :)

An alternative is to go to the Appearance tab where the font size can be set Normal, Large & Extra Large and see if any of those are suitable.

If the computer is connected to the internet it is vulnerable regardless of whether or not a browser is open. If you don't use the computer for internet access and it is not on a network physically disconnect it.

Yes, but still not good enough.

That did it. Thank you very much.

It is on a network. Even if I do not go online, there is danger. Hope the computer gods are watching out for me.

BTW, is there anyway to increase the size of desktop icons?

Completely satisfied with the help received!

My husband loves minesweeper and just noticed that it appears very tiny on new monitor. Also Solitaire. Any suggestions?

Are you talking about the games themselves looking small? Well that comes down to changing the resolution to something that is tolerable so that you can read what is on the screen better.

    Yes.

I did not change the resolution because Pete told me it was better not to. I opted to make ions and text on desktop bigger by adjusting the font size in Appearance tab.

I have since opened several of my programs and find that the size of everything is much smaller. Is there anyway to increase the size of applications?

You can increase the text size shown in applications but if that doesn't help then your only option is to pick a resolution with a smaller pixel count.
