Malwarebytes detected a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) in one of the Restore Points.

I would not be concerned about this at present and would NOT advise clearing your restore points at this juncture.

Hi kronos, Are you having this problem with the Dell comp in your System Details?
You said that you had removed the RAM sticks (1GB 512MB) and run the comp with each to test operation - does the comp go through the Shutdown and Restart when you did this test?
Otherwise I'm inclined to think you have buggy/corrupt Software which may be the cause. Neil.

    Reboots when opening programs?

Try fixing file associations. I believe Doug Knox has reg files that restore default file associations.

It did at least three days ago. Currently the system stop errors are no longer occurring after updating optional updates through windows update, check disk for errors (chkdsk) with both options selected.

It's not my dell. This thread is for a Compaq Presario S4020WM Windows XP Home SP3. I left the computer on for at least 20 hours, and there has been no system errors (Stop errors). When testing the RAM sticks, there was not stop errors, except 'System recovered from Serious error'.

There were a few more BSOD when testing the RAM sticks one at a time. It occurred with the 512MB and the 1GB, i think. I was thinking about retesting the RAM sticks again, by booting with one RAM stick inserted in slot 0 and then test slot 1. Could there be a faulty memory module slot?

There are a few rootkit malware that utilize the cpuz136 service.
Try running mbar (malwarebytes anti-rootkit) and/or other rootkit scanners.
You may want to start a thread in the removing malware forum. The errors you have received indicate that there may be a rootkit, not usually detected by anti-malware tools.

Thank you. I will post in the malware forum regarding possible rootkit.

Is it possible to leave this thread open? I am hoping to retest the RAM Sticks, by removing both sticks and placing one at a time in slot 0. I plan on doing this today.

Thank you everyone for the all the help you all have given.

Update: New thread created at http://www.windowsbbs.com/malware-virus-removal/107107-possible-rootkit.html

Request: Please keep the following thread open, http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-xp/107036-computer-reboots-when-opening-programs.html

Yes by all means do a further test on the RAM. My worry would be whether the RAM is same spec. ie. CL7 CL9 MHz identical ECC or non-ECC. There are quite a few details you need to check with RAM sticks to ensure they are compatible.
Yes, you may have a faulty RAM slot on the board but if you run http://www.piriform.com/speccy it would show whether the connections are giving a reading. Neil.

I think the computer is clean. Malware removal forum thread is http://www.windowsbbs.com/malware-virus-removal/107107-inactive-possible-rootkit.html

I have not uninstalled any of the programs/applications needed in the above thread. I think the RUN command for ComboFix is ComboFix /uninstall.

I received the following Stop error messages after installing AVG 2014 per users request (uninstalled again and installed Charter Internet Security Suite):

Hi kronos, Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier.

Try running your comp with the 1GB RAM only for a few days to see if you have any repeat problems.
My concern is that your RAM Bandwidth and CAS Latency are different.
It has been my experience that for total reliability - the RAM should be IDENTICAL in structure. Neil.

Thank you for the quick response. I will run with the 1GB RAM stick installed for a few days and see if the Stop errors or restarts occur (computer restarts on its own).

Does it matter which slot I place the 1GB RAM stick in?

I am not sure how to determine the slot numbers. I removed the 512MB RAM stick and so far no more stop errors. I am looking over the event logs to see if any occurred while my brother was using it.

Thank you all for all the advice. I hope to keep this thread open for a little bit longer.
