Hi Reilly, I've had no problems with WU interfering with Start8. I think there were other underlying issues with those who claim to have had problems.
I have found that using Start8 has enabled me to get around and learn more about the OS (W8.1) in a way I can follow and get back to the Desktop easily. ;) Neil.

Not the first problem here with Classic Shell. Haven't had any of my not PC Savy friends call and complain either.

I agree. No worries with Classic Shell or Start8 interfering with anything. And besides, those programs don't remove or modify the default Windows 8 Start Screen. You can still access it with either program. So if WU needed to update it, it still can.

And finally, if either of these program did mess something up, both uninstall cleanly and restore everything back to the defaults.

I thought about trying Classic Shell or Start 8, but I wound up tweaking Win 8.1 so it starts up on the desktop, I put icons of everything I need on the desktop, and It has become as intuitive as my other computers (I am still running XP on 2 of them) But when one XP oldie breaks, I can tweak Win 8.xx on any new computer to be usable.

W8.1 added the option to boot to the desktop. If that works for you, then great.

You need to dump those systems now - or at least take them off your network (or isolate them from the Internet in your router) so they don't become a threat to the rest of us, your other computers, or other users in your household.

If you just cannot part with perfectly good hardware, repurpose it. Use one system to stream music and videos, and the other as a NAS - network attached storage - and backup location for your other systems.
