o/s windows 98 adaware spy bot stinger av zone alarm firewall computer is old handed down. problem is i am missing 7 dll files,14 vxd files, and 1 386 file. my windows 98 cd rom has files missing on it cant get anything in the windows setup part of add/remove the prompts just tells the files are missing.
i ran file checked and found all those files had been delated. i didnt do it i dont know how! how do i get those 22 needed files back. last night i had three fatal blue screens and errors 1 after the other none of which anyone could tell me anything about. id carefully copy the ods and the oe and never got anything back. an kernel32.dll drove me crazy trying to pick up a packet on the internet. i need some help. where do i get the dlls and vxdx and that .386 (symevnt.386) and what and how do i get where they belong? like i said should i panic now or should i have paniced last night?

    Hi jan roberts,
    Welcome to the forum.
Suggest you do (as a first step):
    Start
    run
    sfc
    ok

Follow the directions in the window that opens. Have your windows CD ready; it will ask for it.
Any files that are not replaced by this method are not windows files, but may have been installed by another program since removed, so don't worry about them for the present. But let us know your progress; there are more things we can do.

jan roberts--If the Win98 OS was installed by the PC manufacturer, you may find all those missing files in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. So, using SFC, direct the "Find in" request to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs rather than the Win98 CD.

Will it boot into Safe Mode (repeatedly press the F8 key during bootup and then choose Safe Mode from the boot menu)?

If so, run Spybot and Ad-Aware in Safe Mode as well as a full system scan with your anti-virus program. Since you won't be able to get online in safe mode, you won't be able to update them but if either spyware or viruses are causing the problem, they may be able to clean things up enough to boot into normal mode.

    jan,

"so sorry that it has taken me 11 days to get back to you " - We're in no hurry. :)

"reinstalled windows 98 " - that's good, same as I would have advised.
"i've got more armour on this computer than the u s army. " - Please list the programs so we know what you mean.

"still messed up not as much now " - Exactly what problems do you have?

Meanwhile download spybotSD and adaware (click this and scroll down to find them). Then install them and run them while you're online and update them; also update your antivirus program. Then go offline and run them and delete everything they find.
Run your antivirus program and let it delete anything it's concerned about.
Finally, I think you should download and install and run Hijackthis. Put in in a folder like this c:\htj\hijackthis.exe.
DON'T FIX ANYTHING WITH IT YET. JUST GET THE LOG AND PASTE IT INTO YOUR NEXT POST AFTER ANSWERING ALL THE QUESTIONS ABOVE.

    I merged your two threads.
This is the result of uninstalling programs since the last time you ran SFC, it doesn't mean you need them back.
You haven't posted if you have installed or run Spybot or Ad-Aware, and you are infected with something. Those error reports are coming from Internet Explorer, and something has infected it.
What noise does this computer make? Beeps or what?

i did not lose anything(that was the second time we had done that, first time i lost everything) did it again on the 11th and it took still messed up not as much now.

You say that the first time you lost everything. And the 2nd time you did not.If this is true then how did all the stuuf ( armor ) get back on ? Did you re-install it ?

i've got more armour on this computer than the u s army.

Was ALL that armor shut down BEFORE the attempt to Reinstall Windows ?

Also if you already have a very troubled machine a reinstall over top MAY NOT fix a thing. UNLESS you boot to the floppy ( from a power off state ) and then run the reinstall. Then it still may not fix everything.

And booting form the HD may allow stuff to get loaded that will interfer with a proper reinstall.

Do us a favor please Open Windows Explorer ( not Internet Explorer ) and see if there is more than one Windows folder ? ie; C:/Windows and C:/Windows001. If the machine was booted from the HD this is possible. Unless the user watched carefully during the setup

    BillyBob
