 Okay here goes. We purchased a cd-drive and with it came this Nero 5.5.9.2 software. We uninstalled Adaptec and installed Nero. To this day 3 months later, it is the pits.

    Problems:
CD-drive light won't go out upon startup (we have to manually open/close the drive to turn it off)

    Burning CD's:
    1) CD-R's act like they close and we can't reopen to add data
    2) CD-RW's work occasionally but won't let us erase previous data
    3) Sometimes in burning, it hangs and won't finish its job, we have to restart

I have even uninstalled and reinstalled the program. The first time I even upgraded to the Nero 5.5.1056 by the support of Nero by telehone and cost me $75 and it still gave me problems. Then Nero told me to upgrade the Lite-on firmware (whatever that means) yet Nero doesn't support Lite-on any longer. So I went to Lite-on.com and how do I know which one of these to download? I uninstalled the upgrade and reinstalled it again to the original 5.5.9.2 version.

I am lost. Any pros out there? :(

"1) CD-R's act like they close and we can't reopen to add data "

CD-R's are one shot, record what you can in this session - cause you can't reopen them. Maybe you meant cd-rw's are doing this?

"Then Nero told me to upgrade the Lite-on firmware (whatever that means) "

This means to update the drives etc for the cd drive...

Are you selecting Multisession in Nero?

I had a look on the LiteOn site today for drivers/firmware - the site is dreadful - drivers/firmware partly listed - no details and no download facility.

I seriously wonder if the drive is faulty.

Your drive is supported by Nero 5.5.8.0d, so the 5.5.9.2 should be fine ....

http://www.nero.com/en/632012038142166.php?manu=LITE-ON&lang=en - right at the end of the list.

Yes Pete I am using a Start Multisession.

The preferences say to check or uncheck the "finalize CD ". It is UNCHECKED. So it should not close the cd, only the session. Well that's my problem, it closes the cd. We have done this many times from Adaptec software (which is uninstalled due to non-compatibility), so we are confident we are doing this right.

I too thought the Lite-on site was lousy. I couldn't find a download for the firmware either. I try to utilize the help files in every piece of software we have before going to outside resources, but this one is a total mess.

And yes I think the drive is faulty too, however my husband says its unlikely. But I am not done checking this one out.

Is there a way we can test the drive itself?

I went to the maker of the drive "Buslink.com" site on Saturday and posted on their mb, but there moderators only work mon-fri/ 8-5. I will be getting back with them on Monday.

If it were not for having a 176 page commercial website to backup regularly this wouldn't be that important, but this is rediculous when I can't get anything on CD. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Pete

This sounds like ducking the problem, but have you considered dumping the drive and getting another one? They are only £20 or so in UK.

I'll let you know after I check with Buslink on Monday.

    Thanks a bunch.

Ran into a problem 2+ years ago with a Buslink drive that does read in the control panel as being a Lite-On drive. I tried everything, including the jumper to enable only PIO recognition (don't mess with this if it you're not already familiar with it). Long story short, same continual light as you are experiencing. I RMA'ed it and then installed a regular Lite On CDRW drive. The Buslink was indeed defective.

    ;)

Yes Mark I have uninstalled all of Adaptec. I even went into the registry as I have been shown and removed it there too.

Buslink finally wrote me back and he told me to stay away from Memorex, Comp USA and Staples brand cd's. He did tell me the firmware upgrade allows me to use a wider variety of Blank Media but it does not enhance the drive or it's burning capabilities. He also warned me that downloading the wrong firmware can disable the drive all together. But he did not offer any suggestions of correcting the problem. What a waste of time that was!

I do have to agree I think this is a defective drive and I have had enough. Will invest in another one when I can.

    Thanks everyone so much. :(

I would stay away from multisession burning. If you want to keep writing to a drive, use Packet Writing. Then finalize the CD when it gets full.
