I uninstalled Avast anti-virus from my Windows 7 computer. When I tried to restart my computer to uninstall the rest of its files, Windows failed to start. Instead of showing the boot screen, it showed me automatic repair options. I clicked on Startup Repair, waited for it to do something, and nothing has happened. It says it's attempting repairs, but after waiting a few hours, and then letting it stay on overnight, nothing has happened. I've even turned it off, and then tried restoring it to a later time, but it still does nothing. Does this mean I have to reinstall Windows 7, and start all over?

    Hi ecotech, Welcome to WindowsBBS.:)

Does this mean that you were able to use Safe Mode or did it just display the options to start with last known good configuration?
We'll some more info on your System Details > UserCP > and scroll to the bottom of the page to follow instructions to Save and show. Neil.

Hi ecotech, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

    Follow these steps:

    1. Enter the advanced recovery options.
    2. Choose the Command Prompt option in the System Recovery Options window.
    3. When the Command Prompt window opens type the following commands, exactly as written below, in the order in which they are presented, and press enter after entering each command:

    • Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    • Bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
    • BootRec.exe /fixmbr
    • BootRec.exe /fixboot
    • sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
    • chkdsk c: /r
    • exit
    4. If you receive any warnings or notifications asking you are you sure press Y to confirm.
    5. After exiting the Command Prompt window, reboot the computer and see if you can boot into Windows 7 successfully.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.
