It may seem an obvious question but i have the the following programs installed on my computer.
    firewall ( Zonealarm 4.5.594)
    antivirus ( Norton 2004 )
popup stopper ( Smart Popup Blocker )
adware and malware ( Adaware, PestPatrol, Spybot Search & Destroy )
    email ( mailwasher pro )
the question is what will SP2 give me that i don't already have and should i take a chance fixing something that isn't broke ? at least for the next few months anyway. ( Am i just being cautious or just being chicken ?? )

I'm of the same opinion as you. Those of us who are already security conscious really don't stand to benefit from XP 2.

alboy--Although SP2 is primarily about security there are some other new/improved features. See at the bottom of the list here
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/features.mspx
Of course you may not need these features.
And concerning your present security precautions, have you reviewed your settings in IE Tools|Internet Options|Security and Privacy tabs? Among other things, I set my Privacy slider to Medium High.
Having a list of sites in your Restricted sites is a good idea. You can do this manually and/or get a predetermined list from IESpyAds
    https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm
And SpywareBlaster is a very desireable program to have on your PC
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It runs in the background. No scans needed, but you do have to get updates every ten days or so.

I should have mentioned that i also have SpywareBlaster installed on my machine and also use the Medium High setting in IE,
To prevent having to say no to Active X running all the time i use PTFB ( the free version ) available Here
I can Ghost my C: drive before trying SP2 ( although i have never had to restore an image ) so i will eventually install SP2

many thanks for any interest and replies

Frankly, I'd rather have a virus than SP2, it's easier to deal with and downloads much faster. :D

Finally managed to get SP2 installed and running but when i try to enable Zonealarm ver 4.54 it crashes the system and then on restart it crashes after i login and i presume Zonealarm is trying to load.

I'll tell you one thing SP2 has that SP1a does not have. DEP, or Data Environment Protection. While not all computers support this yet, XP can handle this using software, and is enabled by default for MS Windows programs. What this does is prevent programs from being run from memory addresses set aside for data, hopefully getting rid of a lot of buffer overrun exploits.
In the near future, processor chips will do this.

Hi Mark... DEP = Data Execution Prevention.

All computers will have the Software protection... not all will have the more advanced Hardware protection.

    Data Execution Prevention

    Sp2 running finally

:) Have finally got sp2 running and it appears okay, the problem seemed to be that Zonealarm 4.54 was not sp2 compliant, unistalled it and updated to version 5.1.011 and all seem well ( for the time being at least )
Another point that may have affected the install was that i am running an Athlon-64 bit proccesor that supports Data Execution Prevention
a description can be found Here Zonealarm 4.54 is not compliant but version 5.1.011 is

Thanks for the correction, my mind must have been thinking of other things at the time of post.
