For the past 2 months or so, my computer has been randomly restarting and it is driving me crazy. Sometimes it will restart after 5 minutes of use, other times I can go days without it restarting. Today it must have restarted 20 times while I was doing all sorts of tasks: playing mp3s, typing a paper in word, browsing the internet, running a virus scan with norton internet security 2004, etc. Here are the specs of my computer (which I built last summer):
    P4 2.8C
    Abit IS7 865PE MoBo
    2x512 Geil Golden Dragon PC3200
    2x160GB HDD's
    GeForce4 Ti4200 (64 MB, AGP)
    CDRW/DVD drive
    CDRW drive
    Floppy Drive
    TV Tuner Card
Antec Sonata w/ included 380W Antec PS

These restarts happen immediately, that is, the screen just goes black and then the bios starts up. There is no "shutdown" screen or any kind of warning, although sometimes I believe the cursor becomes an hourglass a fraction of a second before the restart happens. I scanned the Windows drive today with Norton and it came up clean, same with Adaware and Spybot. Here is my debuglog, which I do not know how to make sense of :)

sounds like a memory problem. Download and run a memory check program and see if the memory is good.

    Turn off auto restart
    Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery
    uncheck auto restart

Doing this will probably lead to a blue screen eventually- write the error down and post it. Also, have a look in your event logs (in Admin Tools) for clues.

that dump is a USER.DMP and generated by IE crashing. This will not cause your machine to reboot, and is unrelated to your problem. If its crashing the system, follow johanna's advice and look for a MEMORY.DMP in c:\ or c:\windows

I checked the memory yesterday with Windows Memory Diagnostic. It ran for about an hour and everything was fine. Do I need to use another memory tool? Also, last night I shut off automatic restart, but ironically the computer has not had any problems since I did that (before it was restarting like crazy). I searched for a MEMORY.DMP file and did not find one. The only file that seems close is one called MEMORY.H in the "debugging tools for Windows" folder. If this file is important to look at, please tell me and I will post it. Looking at the event viewer, I do see a trend that may be pertinent, although I don't know what it means. Looking back through yesterday's events, sporadically there is a yellow "Warning" event, and under source is says "Dhcp." When I double click it, it gives the description

"Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (form the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 00508de3668a. The following error occured: The semaphore timeout period has expired. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server. "

To me this doesn't sound like it's referring to my problem, but I don't know what it could mean because I haven't been having any network or internet problems that I can tell. This problem occurs frequently throughout the event viewer, however I don't think it occurs as many times as the computer restarted yesterday. Also, looking at yesterday morning in the event viewer, there is a System Error (red X) that says, "error code 10000008e, parameter 1 c0000005, parameter 2 805525a1..." and so on. This error looks like a one time error though. I appreciate everyone's advice, please tell me what else I should do.

I am not as tech savy as most of these guys but have you thought about checking the wires that go from your case switches to your mother board? Just thinking that if say the reset wire was loose it could cause this same problem.

I have nothing more to offer from a programming standpoint.

OK, I got my first blue screen since turning off automatic restart. Here is the info:
    page fault in nonpaged area
    STOP: 0x00000050 (0xa33817a8, 0x0000000, 0x80552970, 0x0000000)
    Beginning dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump complete

First of all, what does this mean? Second of all, have we discovered the root of my problem? I will also check those case wires as Nuckle suggested, I guess it's best to rule out simple things first. Thanks everybody

Interesting.. Run your new and shiny memory.dmp it just made through the dump tool (see link in my sig), and lets see what we got. First blush looks like pool corruption, or possible(and hopefully) a driver with a bad attitude

It did not seem to make a memory.dmp file, however, when I checked my settings in control panel I see that "write debugging information" is set to "small memory dump (64KB)." I found a folder in C:/Windows called minidump, and in there I found lots of dump files. I ran DebugWiz on the most recent dump file, and will post the results here. BTW, do I need to set Windows to write to a complete memory dump, rather than a small one, for future use? Thanks a million.

That's the end, is it bad memory? Oh, I hope not! And what is the "pool corruption" you mentioned?

This incident has happened a handful of times in the last two days, however, it doesn't seem to be happening as frequently as the restarts had been happening. But I'd appreciate any help from people.

This is pool corruption. I need to write up a 'how to troubleshoot pool corruption' generic post. give me a couple days to get that together. If you havent heard anything by monday bump this thread to remind me, thanks.

New sort of update. Today I decided to yank my TV tuner card out of the computer, b/c I never use it, and I remembered when installed the dirvers they weren't windows certified or whatever, so I thought it can't hurt to take out the card (it was a V-Stream pvr tv878. Anyway, I took out the card, start up the computer, and nothing!! It doesn't post, but all I get is this loud beep. The beep lasts about 5 seconds, then it stops, then it lets out another 5 second beep, ad infinitum. I was freaking out, thinking my CPU was dead or something, but I turned off the comp and booted it again and this time it worked, BIOS loaded, (although I had to hit F1 to continue, it was that Checksum error message, or whatever you get when changing hardware). Windows loaded, but after about 2 minutes it froze, blue screened with a "Bad_Pool_Caller" message, and I restarted it. Upon restart the same problem as before happened, didn't post, long beep, nothing on screen. I continued restarting, cleared the CMOS, and eventually Windows loaded. Now everything is running fine, it hasn't frozen or given me an error message, and I have no idea why it wasn't posting before. Oh, while in the midst of the post, non-post restarts, I put in a floppy and it booted mtinst (memory checker) off of the disc. About halfway through the test the computer froze, froze dead. It didn't give an error message or bad memory message, but just locked. I had to restart, but after that everything's been working fine. One thing I wonder is if it could be some problem with Norton Internet Security 2004. The only reason I say that is recently I turned on the comp and there was a Windows message saying, "Your computer has recovered from a serious error." I submitted the error to Microsoft, and up came a screen from the MS website saying there was a problem with Norton Live Update and I should run it. I ran it though, needed no updates, and Norton seems to be running fine at this time. Thanks everyone for your help.

Thanks for the tip. OK, just to make sure, when you say I set the value to 0x2A, that'll actually look like 0x0000002a (42) in regeditor, right? So now I just wait for the computer to crash again, and then I will get a new dump file to analyze?

OK, new crappy development. Last night I decided to shut off my computer (I usually just put it in standby overnight.) This morning when I turned it on, a horrible sound came out of it, like a dying animal. I quickly turned off the computer and opened the side of the case. I then turned it back on and observed that this sound is coming from what I believe is the "northbridge" fan (it is the fan that is attached to the MoBo). It sounded like that fan was really struggling, the noise was very loud, and I checked to make sure no wires were obstructing the fan or anything, but none were. After the BIOS posted, I had that message "CPU unworkable or has been changed, please enter softmenu," but I hit F1 and the computer continued to boot. However, AS SOON as the Windows logo appeared (the initial one that has the little bar moving from left to right under it), the computer froze cold, and then a blue screen came up. I restarted numerous times, and this same thing always happened. However, when I booted into Safe Mode everything worked fine. I booted into Safe Mode a couple times, but then when I would try a normal reboot, the comp. would freeze as soon as the windows logo appeared.
Now, I obviously do not have extensive knowledge of computers, but my guess right now is that my MoBo is *******. Maybe something on it is messed up and so Windows can't load some driver or something when it trys to start, but Safe Mode doesn't require this driver, or MoBo function, to run. Is this right? I appreciate your help on this, because I need to know whether or not to RMA my MoBo (to Newegg) or not. Also, if the MoBo is ******* up, could this have been my problem all along, with the restarts?
Oh, I forgot to mention, I pretty much got the fan to stop making the sick animal noise by smacking the side of the case. This, however, did not change anything about the non-boot up problem. Thanks.

OK, new update. This afternoon I loaded Windows in Safe Mode and did system restore to a restore point from two days ago. I didn't expect this to fix things, but it did, I am now using Windows in the normal mode and everything seems decent so far. I did get a blue screen a moment ago, and I will post the dump here. The only thing I can think of that I installed between two days ago and now is the new version of MusicMatch Jukebox (10).

I've gotten a few more crashes today, they seem to be coming more often. I think some driver somewhere is at fault, but I don't know if it is my motherboard or what. I would appreciate anyone's help.

Joe should be taking a look at some point tonight or late tomorrow and give you ideas on where to go from here. He's about the only one who can peel open those dump files and make much sense out of them.
