My CD drive is inop. I cannot burn a cd or play a cd. I purchased and installed an ADS Tech Instant music product to transfer my vinyl collection to CD. I am able to copy my albums onto my computer, but now my cd drive won't recognize a cd. I uninstalled the NERO cd that came with my ADS unit, and no change. I restored my pc to a date before I installed the NERO software, and still no change. In properties of the E-drive, all seems OK. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, no change. It's been about 2 months since I used the cd player/burner so I don't know if what I did last week with the ADS unit caused the problem or not. Please help!

    Thanks
    Greg

Do you get an error message when you insert, say, a data CD?

It is possible that there is dust on the lens - try blasting compressed air from a can into the drive - tray open.

Have you uninstalled the drive through Device Manager and rebooted to let Windows redetect and reinstall it?

Does the drive light flash on boot or on inserting a CD?

Check the power and ribbon cables to the drive and remove and reseat them at each end.

Strong possibility that the drive has quietly died.

Removing the Upper and/or Lower Filter keys may help. Make sure you remove the right one, here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/

If the Filter key(s) do not exist then it is a different problem. If after removing the Upper and/or Lower Filters, the drive does not show up in Device Manager, restart the computer and check the POST screen during start-up or go into the BIOS set-up to see if the drive shows there. If it doesn't show in either, then the drive is probably defective and needs replacement.

PeteC, I've blown out the lens, and the drive light does flash. I've uninstalled and let the pc reinstall. No change. BurrWalnut, where on the BIOS set up will I find where the drive is? Should it be on the first page or elsewhere? And what is the POST screen?

Firstly, have you looked for and removed the one or two registry keys I mentioned? If you are concerned about removing them, create a system restore point (All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > Create a restore point) and then remove them if they are present.

Power On Self Test - a DOS based screen which (generally) shows as you boot - white text on a black ground.
