    Hello,
A friend of mine brought over his XP computer because it was running really slow and had many other problems. He knows that Microsoft doesn't support XP anymore but wants to wait a little longer until he decides what type of computer to buy.

In the meantime I have run virus protection, malwarebytes, and various other cleaners but this one problem I am not able to resolve.

Every time we turn on the computer we get this message:

    Quote:
The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge.

Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation. To resolve this issue, try to reseat the power adapter.
Strike the F3 key (before the F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning message again.

Strike the F1 key to continue. F2 to run the setup utility. Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics.

    Unquote

We tap the F1 key and windows comes up everytime. I did run the F5 one and received these Error Code 3600.0649 Invalid AC adapter reported.

I would appreciate any help you can provide to solve this problem.

    Thank you.

    Jean

So this is a laptop.... and are they using the original power adaptor that came with the machine?

Yes, this is a laptop and I am assuming it is the original power adapter.

Could be either AC Adaptor, the power jack, or the mainboard.

Does this mean the computer is on the way to fail? Should I just let him know that?

A new AC Adaptor could be as low as $65 ... A repair to the power jack might be even less... A new mobo - probably too much $$.

On the bottom of the machine there is a Service Tag. You could either post the number here or go to dell.com/support then enter the service tag. You will be able to download the Service Manual to see the procedures on how to replace the Power Jack and/or the Mainboard. Just to get an idea of what to tell your friend.

Thanks for the help. I will pass on the information to my friend. It is too complicated for me. I sure wouldn't like to take the laptop apart even for myself.

    Thanks for all the information.
