Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P shutdown issue

Hi. I bought this Scaleo P machine second hand a week ago and it has an issue where for no apparent reason it suddenly goes into some kind of comatose state. The screen goes blank and it stops processing but it does not switch off. I know it stops processing because I use the machine to play a midi keyboard and this has happened once when I was playing - suddenly the screen went black and there was no sound when I hit the piano keys. But the machine is still running. The only thing I can do is a hard power cycle using the switch on the front of the chasis. I've ensured all drivers are up to date and I've done a W7 update. Any ideas before I throw it out the window? I ran the windows debug tool and have some debuglog files I can post if that helps.

I'll paste a couple of those debug files. Plenty more where these came from ;-)

Look up
"How do I know if my computer has a memory problem?"
in Help and Support. Run the diagnostics.

It keeps saying "Hardware" in the debug logs.

Check that there is a good air flow from the cooling exhaust. Check at startup, after Windows loads "thermal control" software kicks-in. Dust might be blocking the cooling fins.

Consider that it may have suffered bumps, knocks, (dropping ). Run Error Checking (CHKDSK) on the drives, again, look it up in Help and Support. Set it to scan the surface of the disk.

I can't read debug logs in depth, I use the key listings along with my experience.

Thanks for the reply Matt. I had already tried chkdsk but it didn't show any errors. I took the chassis case off and checked all connections, fans etc. No sign of anything obvious.

However, I did disable a few things in Startup and I've left the PC running for 3 days now without it shutting down which is a step forward.

One of the applications was something called Splashtop Remote which I can't even find to remove completely.

Other applications disabled in the Startup list were Spotify, Java update, Daemon Tools lite, Omnipage, Quicktime, Winampagent, Weathermate.

Difficult to say yet if the problem is gone for good. I suppose I should re-enable each of those apps in Startup one at a time to see which one might be causing the issue.

I'll post again if I find out something that might be useful for others to know.

Hmmm... latest update is that the PC still goes into freeze mode when I start to use it. It sat there happy enough for 3 days as I described in my last post, but I did not use it during that time. It seems that when I start doing something it eventually locks up. So disabling those items in the Start menu did not solve the issue.

This is a copy of the debug log. Should I move to the Windows 7 forum and start a thread there instead of the hardware forum?

Just my opinions, but I do not like those "00000000". I would first-off suspect a RAM problem.

Did you look up how to test the memory in Help and Support as I suggested?

Again it says "Hardware". Firstly, have you disconnected all external hardware? Everything, including printers, etc.

You could go into the BIOS (startup configuration settings) and set them to default. There will be instructions there, but since it is an Intel, you need to press F9 and then F10 to save the changes.

It may be due to a bad connection of one of the parts, like the RAM module/s or the HDD, disconnect and reconnect them. (Make sure the power is disconnected.)

Please give us some details of the system. Have you investigated an overheating problem (dust trapped in the cooling system)?

Matt

Matt,

Thanks, I appreciate you taking time to answer these posts.

Memory test came up clean.

I will try removing and replacing the RAM card(s) and re-checking all connections in the machine. WIll also try the BIOS reset as you suggested.

I don't think over-heating is the issue here. I just saw it crash and reboot very soon after switch on (and no obstructions or dust visible). This time it went into blue screen, did a dmp and auto restarted with the option to start in safe mode.

Update:

Each of the two 2BG RAM cards were removed individually and the reset issue still happened in each case.

BIOS settings set back to default today, awaiting results.

Any reason to suspect that Western Digital hard drives are problematic? When I removed this hard drive to check it for visible problems I noticed that it has a note stuck to the top, looks like it's written by the previous owner as a reminder to himself. It basically says 'this is my original hard drive, in Jun 2011 I cloned this drive to a new 1TB drive'...which leads me to suspect that this drive may have an issue and he removed the new (cloned) drive before selling the PC.

Not sure if the symptoms are typical of a hard drive issue.

Reason I ask about Western Digital hard drives is that I used to own a Scaleo L machine and its hard drive locked up completely.

Update:

Resetting BIOS settings didn't solve the issue. Starting to suspect that a new hard disk might be the answer.

By the way I entered all my system details into my profile when I first signed up. Can you view them?

Western Digital drives are fine. I'm running 3 across my two computers and all are fine, apart from a slightly iffy power connector on one of my drives (which isn't the hard drive's fault either: a damaged cable and weight being put on said cable has weakened it slightly).

Cloning to a hard drive does not remotely mean that the hard drive is having issues - he might just've upgraded capacity-wise, and I once did a similar thing using a small IDE drive to install Windows XP on a board that was using a SATA hard drive on an addon card that I no longer had a diskette for - I know this is not your situation, but . You may indeed have a hard drive issue, but have you tried an alternative power supply? Struggling power supplies can cause some very weird issues.

Thanks. No I haven't tried a different PSU, but I still have my old Scaleo L in the attic. I could pull it out and swap the PSU's to see if that makes a difference (if they're compatible).

FYI, both his original and new HD's were 1TB, according to the note he left in there.

My son is telling me to re-install Windows 7 but something is telling me that's not the issue.
