    I have just removed the trojan Dropper/Gen :eek: from my computer with the aid of SUPERAntiSpyware. Spybot S&D missed this. I was doing a routine full scan & I found it along with 58 tracking cookies! I have also downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-malware & have done a complete (just under 2 hours) scan. I am now clean according to them. I also use SpywareBlaster & MS Defender. It just goes to show you can't be too careful!

    Has anyone else had a run in with this trojan?

    Forums are full of folks that have. :(

    Did you want to post logs to be looked at, or did you just post to tell us of your run-in? :confused:

    Well, I am not totally sure how to post any logs. I was just curious to hear of other people's experiences with it. It is the first time I have had to remove malicious spy/malware from my computer. I wondered if anyone knew anything about it, such as its origins or malefic intentions?

    This topic will provide the information required to post a log.

    The name given the rogue, Trojan Dropper/Gen!, is exactly as it suggests - generic. There is an abundance of malware that falls into that category and the origin/intent varies. No way for us to know with the information provided.

    OK, the name didn't have an exclamation mark (!) after it though. I just download the RSIT tool as it says & follow the instructions I take it. :)

    OK, I have downloaded the tool & put it on my desktop. Sorry if this sounds like a silly question but what exactly happens when I run it? And just exactly what is HijackThis? I have seen it on other forums, but I am not totally sure what it does.

    HijackThis is a tool that basically scans for the presence of registry entries that malware uses for loading points and creates a report. It can also be used to remove such entries. RSIT is another tool that goes further in depth in it's registry scan, utilizes HijackThis as well as checking key areas for created and modified files. Together they provide a starting point for us to anylize what needs to be done to cleanse the system.

    I have a couple of questions about the RSIT tool. When I run it, it will scan & make logs, I understand that, but I don't understand when it says it will download Hijackthis when needed. I am not sure about hijack this as I have never needed it & I don't want to inadvertently wipe my hard drive out or something accidentally. Forgive me if this sounds a little silly but I am a bit apprehensive about the procedure. How long will a RSIT scan generally take?

    Dave, I would not ask you to run RSIT if there were any risk involved. HijackThis is a safe program, now owned by Trend Micro (Internet Security software provider) and will only be downloaded and installed if;

    1. The current version is not already installed
    2. If you allow it if/when prompted by your security software

    The RSIT scan takes less than 1 minute and is painless.

    I don't mean to sound rude or impatient, but this now makes 13 posts in this topic and you have yet to do a scan or post a log. Take a look at the main page of the Malware and Virus Removal forum here. There are many, many folks seeking help, and all of them run tools such as RSIT upon request (which is nearly every topic), without question. You will find the same at any forum across the internet where help with malware is being sought out. It is the first thing needed in diagnosing an infected system. Please, just do the scan and post the log or let it go.

    Yes, I am sorry to be a bit of a pain. Thanks for the reply, I certainly don't want to hold up anyone else who needs help. So I can download Hijackthis safely if prompted, or not as the case may be then? It's just that I heard that you have to be careful if you download Hijackthis that's all. Thanks for your patience.
