Attn noahdfear can't install service packs
Quote:
Hi Betsy
I believe you will need the expertize of noahdfear on this matter.
Here is what I want you to do, Post this message along with a HJT log on the Malware and Virus removal forum.
I will PM noahdfear and let him know that this is a problem he should handle.
If any one can figure this out he can, believe me, he is the smartest person I know. I'v seen him do things that I will be lucky to ever know how to do.
So please post this along with a HJT log and I will PM him.
Thanks
Geri
It was suggested by goddez1 on the Windows XP page that I post to one of the experts on this forum.
I've had a host of computer problems since June. I had posted on another forum for help. Rather than repeating myself, you can read all about my problems here:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread...588#post221588
A fantastic guy over there helped me through many problems and found lots of crappy stuff hiding on my computer. It seemed to be clean.
I now understand that if I don't install the Service Packs 1a and 3, I'll get reinfected real quick. At first, I couldn't even download SP 1a from the Microsoft website. After more cleaning up, I've been able to download 1a to my desktop but can't seem to get it to install. The great guy at Spybot referred me to this group as he thought it was a problem with my Windows.
Here's my original message on this board and the responses I've gotten:
Can't install System Packs
Do you think you can help me get to the root of this problem and help me get the service packs installed so I'm protected again?
Thank you so much,
musicteacher
Betsy

Hi Betsy
While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode " if not already selected.
Choose "Yes " at the Warning prompt.
Expand the "Tools " menu.
Click "Resident ".
Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active. " box.
In the File menu click "Exit " to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
Reboot.
Now, scan again with HijackThis and fix the following items.
O4 - S-1-5-18 Startup: AutoTBar.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - .DEFAULT Startup: AutoTBar.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: AutoTBar.exe (User 'Default user')
Post a fresh HijackThis log after rebooting yet again.
See if you can download and install SubInACL from Microsoft. Save it to the desktop, double click to run it (do not change it's default installation path). Let me know how that goes when you post back please.

Newest HJT log
I did everything you said and here is the new log. Those AutoTBar things appear to have stuck around. I clicked the little boxes and did what you said. I'm going to try and get the SubInACL next.

There's no need to apply Service Pack 1a prior to installing Service Pack 3. These Service Packs are cumulative, meaning they contain all the fixes addressed in prior Service Packs. That said, please click the following link and download the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers. Save it to your desktop.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Do not run it yet.
Download RunSubInACL.exe from the following link, saving the file to your desktop. (use the External Mirror 1 link)
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-83641.html
Once saved, close out all other open programs and windows, then double click RunSubInACL.exe to run it. Sit back and wait for it to finish, then restart the computer when done.
Now, please make sure your antivirus program and antispyware program (Comodo and Spyware Terminator) are disabled since they can interfere with the service pack installation. Feel free to disconnect from the internet for now if you'd feel safer with your protection programs disabled.
Now see if you can install Service Pack 3.

SP 3 did not install
I did everything exactly as you said. When I clicked on the desktop to install SP 3, it ran for awhile and then displayed this message:
Setup has detected that the version of the Service Pack installed on your system is lower than what is necessary to apply this hotfix.
At minimum, you must have Service Pack 1 installed.
I turned Comodo back on before I reconnected to the internet.

Interesting. Guess we can't believe everything we read
Try installing SP1a again. Best to disable security software again first.

Please highlight and copy the contents of the code box below.
Code:
@echo off
dir %Systemdrive%\svcsys* /a h /s > check.txt
start notepad check.txt
exit
cls
Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit Enter to open a command window.
Right click in the command window and select Paste.
You drive will be searched for any files whose name begins with svcsys and a text file will open with the results when complete.
If any, please post those results here.
Out of curiosity, did you use one of the following links to get SP1a? (and which one)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

This link to SP 1a
I clicked on this link, provided by the malware expert at the Spybot forum to get 1a. It looks exactly like both of the ones that you posted:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
I'm running the other thing now.

Awaiting your instructions
Anxiously waiting your observations. Prepared to stay up late to work this problem out, if I need to.
Thanks!

First, lets see if the registry contains any pointers to svcsys (you are positive the error message says svcsys ?)
Download RegSearch.zip and extract the contents of the zip file to it's own folder.
Open the folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Enter svcsys on the top line and click OK. After completion, notepad will open with all the found instances, if any. Please post that log here.
I would also like for you to download the SP1a package from the 2nd link in my post above. Delete the one you currently have.

My mistake
Is the error you are referring to the one that I get when I try to install SP 1a?
I think perhaps, so I disabled the virus stuff, went offline, and tried to install SP 1a.
The message I get says:
The file c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\avc.sys
is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then click retry.
So it's avc.sys, not svcsys
