I live in Michigan. My hubby is currently in Florida helping his mother out. She has an XP computer. These past few days he's been getting a popup from XPAntiVirus 2008 telling him he has viruses on his pc and should download a program to get rid of them. Doing a bit of research it looks to me like he has a high jack problem. The pc hadn't been virus protected for about a month and I'm thinking something got into it. He has the latest Norton AV on it now and running. My problem is this: how can I help him get rid of the high jack long distance? I know that lots of times we post a log here and you all help us clean it up. Would it be possible for him to just download the HIGHJACKTHIS program and just run it and hope it fixes the problem? Or, should I get him to sign up at this forum and you all can help him through it? He has limited knowledge about the workings of a computer, but I should be able to help him look for stuff with MY limited knowledge. :D

Thanks for any info you can give me.

    :)

    Hi Panda :)

Best bet is to have him register here, read through this topic and post the HijackThis and Deckard's logs into this topic (just lets us know it's him posting).

Thank you! I'll get right on it and let you know what name he's using.

Just wanted to come back and let you know what's going on. Hubby was gone for the weekend down there fishing, so we finally got back to working on this problem. Here's the deal: it WASN'T a highjack after all! We both have IE on our computers and we use excite as our homepage. He could bring the generic excite page up, but couldn't get signed in on the personal page. I experimented here and couldn't get signed back in after I signed out, either. I tried all kinds of security adjustments and cookie fixes and cache cleaning and nothing was happening. I then tried to sign in and sign out using my firefox browser. (had to download that because of some game site issues) No problem. This is telling me that IE is having some security issues. We both have the most current updates for our computers and browsers, but it just wasn't working right. I had him download firefox and now he can get into the excite homepage. YEAH! Trying to contact excite was useless and I don't know if I really want to contact IE. I hear more and more about the problems with IE and for years I've been putting up with it, too, but thanks to a friend I finally got firefox and am very pleased with it.

Thanks for your help. It was much appreciated.

    :)

I'd still recommend he post the logs here. From what you described in your first post, the computer does have infections that need removed.

There are a number of topics on this BBS dealing with problems RE: Excite login. A quick search might lead you to a more definitive solution.

I understand what you are saying, but if I am having the same trouble here on my computer and I'm pretty positive I don't have any viruses or trojans, then why would it be a highjack at his end?

AHA! I totally forgot about that. Our main concern was with the homepage problem. Ok. As soon as he has a minute or two I'll have him do all that stuff and I'll post the log here when it's done. Thanks!

    :)
