I am working on an xp xp3 system and I have no sound. In device mgr, it shows "this device cannot start-code 10" on the c-media ac97 audio device. I have uninstalled it and re-booted, downloaded the driver and it won't install in safe or regular mode. There are a lot of complaints on the forums from 2006 and 2007, but nothing current. Can anyone help? Thanks

What computer brand and model is it?
Where did you get new driver from?

Hi Geno and welcome to WindowsBBS :)

If this is your main system it would be helpful if you add your system details to your profile. Please click on the link and follow those instructions it could save some time when resolving this or further issues.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile

If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above :)

If this is not your primary system then please follow the steps above but rather than add them to your profile just include the specifications in your next post to this thread.

This is not my system, it is a family member. It is a pc that was built by a computer store inhouse. It has XP home prem sp3 running an amd processor @ 1.7 ghz. It has 512mb ram and an 80gb hd. I can't see a name on the MOBO, but the bios is Award. I have eliminated any infections.

Download SIW and go Hardware > Motherboard.

Post the make/model of the board and we may be able to point you to the driver on the manufacturer's web site.

I was able to download the correct driver from SiS and it finally worked after several attempts to delete the incorrect one. Thanks for all the replies and help
