My newly reinstalled Firefox 3 browser will only open sites that have the secure 'https:' address. If I only use 'http:' the sites either don't display at all or only display a header (part of the page) and then freeze.

Didn't have any problem before re-installing Firefox 3.

Is there something I need to set / reset?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using a personal firewall? If so which one and did you update the ruleset (if required) for the new version of FF?

Does IE open the pages normally?

    Thanks for the reply.

My browser is now working, but I don't know why.

Just in case I have further problems in the future, what were you going to tell me about my firewall's ruleset?

I use Zone Alarm's Internet Security Suite.

As far as IE goes, I am surprised that it seams to be working. Shortly after I received my Vista computer a year ago, IE stopped working. After much effort to make it work, I finally started using Firefox.

I seam to like using FireFox better though, so I'm sticking with it.

Thanks for any help you offer,

HTTPS uses a different port (443) from HTTP (80), it's possible for most personal firewalls to allow/deny ports depending on application (ie a ruleset).

In your case I thought perhaps your firewall was allowing FF to use HTTPS but blocking HTTP, which is strange though not impossible if you'd been playing with the firewall.

If you haven't been playing though I'd suggest a visit to the Malware and Virus removal board as a precaution. It was probably just a glitch but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Please read this and post the logs in the Malware and Virus Removal forum. I should add that the people in that forum can be quite busy at times but I'm sure your post will be picked up by one of the experts.

It would help if you could quote or link to this thread.

**NOTE** A member of staff may move this thread to the malware removal forum, if so do not start a new thread but post the requested logs in the moved thread.
