Hello Greeneye and welcome to the Board :)

Moved your thread to the Security section - ZA firewall specific and added to your thread title to make it clear what you're asking.

Can't answer your question - too general. You have to make that decision based on what applications you have running. If you have a specific process that you're questioning, then post that.

This post http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425 links to process/data bases for you to lookup processes and applications.

As an FYI, ZA has a forum here http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs

    Regards - Charles

Greeneye--I think the ZA alert will tell you what program or executable is looking for access to the Internet or Trusted Zone. You can then look that program or executable up on Google to see if it is a legitimate program or executable. (In the case of an executable, you can look it up in http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
which was in the link suggested by charlesvar.)
You can do that while the alert is pending on your screen so you do not have to rush to make a decision.
You can also Deny and see what does not work.
I usually Deny anything that wants to act as a Server or access my Trusted Sites. It is rare that that access is necessary. In fact on my PC, Skype and svchost.exe are the only executables to which I give such access.

    zonealarm:deny or allow?

One file that occurred frequently is "smartdefense advisor ". It has been asked in both (deny, allow) by Zonealarm frequently. I suspect that it is something that comes with the antivirus software AVG. But when I did the search I came up with zip.

    Hello Greeneye,

ZA's Smart defense is alerting you that a process or application is accessing part of the operating system and asking for your permission or denial. It may be an AVG process, in that case should be allowed. Post what this file is.

Bring up ZA's (double click on tray icon) help file and type Smart Defense Advisor into the search box.

    Regards - Charles
