 I have a Zonet ZVC7500 usb webcam that I'm trying to install on my new Win7 e-machine laptop. (This is the $300 re-badged Acer laptop Walmart had a couple of weeks ago.)

The webcam software installs just fine but Win7 won't use the driver unless it's "signed" by the manufacturer.

The manufacturer said t.s., no they actually said "If Win7 won’t run anything isn’t digitally signed, then there’s nothing we can do. We don’t have a update driver. "

I let Windows live update look but it found nothing.

    No luck with other searches.

    Any ideas?

When you try to install it, look closely at all the information in the Add New Hardware wizard screens/boxes. See what it calls the device and if there is a model mentioned. If there is a model mentioned, it could be a controller supplied to a few hardware manufacturers and you could try their drivers if they might be suitable (do a websearch for the controller model number).

Open Start -> Computer and see if the webcam shows up there. The drivers it wants to install might be to run special hardware. It might run as a "basic" webcam.

Try using "I will select the drivers myself from a list" (or similar wording) in the Add New Hardware wizard, look for "generic" drivers, start in the Microsoft listing, if there is one.

It is basically an age-old question. Newer operating systems might not be able to run older hardware unless the manufacturer supplies upgraded drivers for them. The manufacturer might eventually supply drivers or it might leave the model to become redundant. If I find that, I look for manufacturers that are prepared to upgrade drivers and buy their products. If they are are not prepared to do that, they don't get my ongoing business.
