My free zonealarm loads on boot but to the desktop. Is there a setting that will send it to the tray instead of my manually sending it to the tray?

paddyslammer--Since I am an old fogey, I still have free ZA 2.6. What do you mean about " you have only limited time ". Is this something new with ZA 3.x? What happens? I cannot find anything on this on the ZA site (though I did not search that hard).

    hi tenbob

hmmmm, good question. but it brings forth other questions.

when you say your zonealarm loads to the desktop, are you referring to the icon, or the program?

did you install za to the programs file, or to the desk top? if to the default programs location, and you selected it to load on start up, then the icon should automatically appear in the systray.

another question... when you say you manually send it to the tray, how do you do that?

what operating system are you running?

    and what version of za?

    this is an odd one....

    :)

also want to recommend the za user community in case you haven't dropped in there.

good chance they can assist you with your systray icon prob if we can't get to the bottom of it...

One possibility I can think of. There's a setting in Zone Alarm that says "show zone alarm on top during internet activity ". If you are always connected to the net and had this checked and also had some program set to automatically check for updates at startup I would think it would cause it to pop up. Probably not your problem but you never know; so.......

The startup may have lost a switch, like /startup or /boot (I no longer have it so can't check). The splash screen is just what you get for the free one.

You could try removing its present startup and starting it from the Startup folder, specifying in the shortcut properties that it start minimized.

It may be the "Toolband" that's enabled...although you have to right click on the task bar, go to Tool Bars and uncheck "Zone Alarm Deskband" to get rid of it temporarily. To get rid of it permanently, there's a setting in Zone Alarm...under "Setup" I think...to uncheck.

Or it may be the message window telling you how to minimize ZA, in which case be sure to put a check in the box in the lower left corner where it says, "Don't show me this again" the next time it comes up.

And now I'm outta' ideas on this one. ;)

Did you ever get this fixed. It seems there's a bit of confusion here. The way I understood your post, the ZA window was open once windows was booted. It seems that the rest thought you were talking about the splash screen. If the window is open I might have the fix for you. Mine started doing this today out of nowhere and I tracked it down. Had forgot all about the shortcut windows uses to start ZA. It's not done by normal means. In windows explorer look in the c:\windows\all users\start menu\startup folder. This isn't the usual startup folder that you find in the start menu. In there you'll find a ZA shortcut. Right click on it and choose properties and make sure that in the box where it says run, it's set to minimized. I never knew this folder existed until a few months ago. I was trying to create a clean boot profile using startup cop which does the same thing as msconfig. Everytime I booted using the profile, ZA would still start even though it was unchecked. To make a long story short I did a find for zone*.* and came across this shortcut. I deleted it and it took care of the problem. My problem with this today reminded of me of that. Mine had somehow got set to run in a normal window. If you haven't fixed it yet, check it out.

It was not the splash screen that concerned me exactly. When I minimized it, it went to the taskbar. THEN I had to manually send it to the Tray. I would like it to go directly to the tray without a splash screen/

Incidentally, I found the link in the startup folder but not where you said. It was at:

    c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\pograms\startup
