    Will ZoneAlarm cause MSN messenger to act up?? Today I downloaded and installed ZoneAlarm. I have a dialup connection, but we often leave our computer online all evening, returning on occasion to browse, email, etc. Tonight my messenger has been shut down each time I left the computer for 15-30 minutes.
    I haven't quite mastered all the settings in zonealarm yet. The automatic lock is activiated for when you leave your computer unattended online.....I am not sure exactly what that does? I had alerts that things had been stopped from entering....ncluded in these there were several instances of msn trying to send info or connect. are some of the settings shutting down MSN?
    Both times when I tried to sign in again, it would fail....telling me to check my connections. the first time I reinstalled messenger over the top and then it worked fine. second time, I finally did the same and again it works fine. Am I just being paranoid?
    and advice about the ZA settings would be appreciated.

    I also run AVG with everything enabled. Don't think it causes problems cause I have had it for some time. Will ZA keep AVG from automatically updating while I am online?

    Hi Katy-
    I run Zone Alarm, AVG and MSN messenger on my computer (Windows XP Home) with no problems. That being said, I don't have ZA's automatic lock enabled, so I'm guessing that's probably what's causing your difficulties.
    Open up Zone Alarm, click on Help, and under the Index tab, type in 'automatic lock' - it explains about 'pass-lock' permission (as well as telling you the purpose of the automatic lock feature). If you then type in 'pass-lock permission', it tells you how to grant that.
    As far as ZA's settings go (Program Control, Programs tab - on the far right):
    1) I'm pretty sure MSN Messenger needs permission to act as a server - that's the only program on my list that has green check marks in the Server column (as well as in the Access column);
    2) AVG update downloader has two green check marks in the Access column, and the updates take care of themselves daily.
    If you want to know any of my other settings, I'll be happy to share.
    Good luck!

    I finally found all the controls...did some reading about it.....I gave "trusted" and "internet" access to the things I am running.....Tried them all before giving access to server on any of the things......(messenger, outlook Express, callwave. AVG) They all seem to be working fine with just the first two things allowed. Thanks for the help!
