zip files turn to .rer files

I have vista home premium on the computer.

I have also:
winrar
winzip
hsj
programs for changing the clips

There is a problem with zip files. For example I can download say 5 zip files ok. I can also use winzip and EXTRACT functions ok. But in this lot of zip files I find that after the extract process, they change to .RER files. I do not know how to view them. I have:

vlc media
quicktime
bs pro
windows media player
real media

All zip files without the .rer will play back on the above media after EXTRACT as the zip files became avi,wmv etc

None of the above media will play the .rer files. Is the .rer files a european file? Like in tv for example, in Europe they have the PAL system which is not viewable in North America as there is the NTSC system here.

I am a beginner user of computers and not familiar at all
