I have a 250MB ZIP drive attached to my Windows 2000 Pro (all the MS patches applied).

I cannot turn the write cache off, despite going in to the ZIp's Disk Properties settings and un-ticking "Write Cache Enabled" setting. Even if I untick it and press OK, going straight back in it comes back ticked  Even after a reboot it returns ticked. I also have heaps of entries in the event log warning me about it -

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: Disk
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 32
    Date: 8/04/2005
    Time: 07:58:25
    User: N/A
    Computer: XXXXX
    Description:
The driver detected that the device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 has its write cache enabled. Data corruption may occur.
    Data: bla bla bla........

How can I get this setting (write cache enabled) to stay OFF?
(PS I am using my Admin account so I do/should have the rights)

IIRC the cache in a Zip drive is only a 25K data write buffer to allow for smooth data flow while writing to disk to hold data while the write heads are shifting to a new track.

Seek times on a Zip are dramatically slower than a HDD and thus the buffer was needed.

Data loss should not be an issue. A zip is an oversized floppy and behaves as a removeable device, not as a fixed disk.

    - - For what its worth, CHKDSK detected my USB2 thumb drive on boot and thought it was a HDD, It ran the full check and pronounced it good.
