Got a call from wifes girlfriend saying she had lost some drives (partition's) on her hard drive. I went over and found that yesterday she had drives C-D-E-F-G and now she only had C & D and the data on D is gone!!!

My first thought was possibly a virus and when I checked her computer I found that NAV was last updated last year! Went to micro trend and downloaded a virus checker and it scanned the C and D drives and found nothing.

I'm not sure where to go from here. Could she have had a virus on one of the now gone partitions and it erased itself? Is the hard drive getting ready to give up the ghost? In my small sphere of experience I've never lost a partition yet alone 3. Running Windows 98SE.

    Any ideas my friends?

BTW.... I was at her house yesterday and backed up partitions D,E,F and G. Skipped C because we ran out of DVD's :D

Hi, How are you looking at the drive ? Windows Explorer ?
I am just wondering if the partions are there but for some reason do not
display in Windows. Were/are the partions all of the same type ?
    eg FATS32
If you boot from a floppy and, using the DIR command, eg
    Dir E: /p
do you see the contents of the partitions ?
If yes, we need to look for a Windows or an Explorer problem.
    regards

Tried looking at the partitions using My Computer, Explorer and also tried using Find to search for files we know are on the missing partitions. All efforts had negative results. Haven't tried looking with DOS but will try that today.

Not sure what the format of the drive is.

Thanks for the post Merlin. :)
