    Hi friends

Let me start with stating a few facts i gather from using sharing & security S&S in xpwin.sp2-3
    1) In control panel > User Accounts, there are only 2 type of Account, namely Admin & limited type
    2) If simple sharing is not used, the Share&Sec dialog will also show the Security tab in the properties of a folder.
    3) From the Computer Management CompMgt (Adm Tools), we can see Shared Folders, Users & Group.
    4) In CompMgt, each user can be set to 'member of ' the various groups by setting its Properties.

    Now my objective:
I want to use one folder 'SFolder' in of one of the PC 'SrvPC' in a LAN as the 'Server'. This is being shared with full rights to intended users in the LAN both at folder & file level.
By the way I had been using Server03.sp2 Active Directory AD but i had in the past numerous 2 way unresolved connection problem between AD server and its Users; hence use LAN without the use of AD.

    Questions:
From CompMgt of the SrvPC I have created a Group eg SvUsers. Now I need to create Users from the other PCs from the WorkGroup. I can add a PC1User from the CompMgt. In the properties dialog of this User I see 3 tabs, (General, Member Of & Profile). With 'Member Of' tab I made the PC1User as a member of Group SvUsers.
From the Share&Secu dialog, I give full control to the group SvUsers for the 'SFolder'.

With this arrangement, as expected, PC1User can see the SFolder but can't access it. Something is missing as I can never place PC1\User any where in the SrvPC. HELP required!! Thanks.

Rt click the shared folder and select Sharing.
This will display the sharing dialog for that folder.
The folder is shared for admin purposes only, thus you must add a new share.

Name that new share something like: ForSvUsers.

Next, set the permissions for the share. (permissions button)

Next addusers by clicking Add button.

Object name = username that you have added via comp mgmt. Repeat for each user and set their controls (full, change, read).

The users you added via comp mgmt should be identical logon names and passwords they use on their workstations.

    Thanks Tony

I had, before yr response, done all that you suggested ie a new name of the shared folder and new user in CompMgt but fell short of typing the password for the new user. I had hesitated to do so because the prefix for the user is still the name of the Server PC & not eg \\WkStn\User1.
With your possitive last line 'identical logon names and passwords they use on their workstations'. I followed through with User at WorkStn being able to access the shared folder excluding other users that had not be added. So issue is resolved. Thanks.

Hope you would indulge me with an extension of this issue involving GROUP. What if i created a SrvUsers Group in the CompMgt, next add UserXYZ with password as member of this SrvUsers Group. Thereafter, on the properties of the SharedFolder i added this group as users. I presume UserXYZ would also be able to access the SharedFolder thus doing away with adding many users, just the Group will do. Much obliged.

    Yes, group should also work.
But why bother with adding an additional group unless you have several additional groups that need to be separated, each with different permissions.
